Looking for background information on Headwaters - please feel free to message me. I understand they may be interested in accepting a riding horse for donation and I’d like to make sure it’s a good placement. Thanks!
I’ve hunted with them and sold the master/huntsman a homebred, as well as kept/trained/shipped two other hunters they bought out east. Good people, beautiful territory, solid setup. The chief qualifier for a horse hunting out west, anywhere, is soundness. It’s a huge territory, and - to this spoiled Virginia foxhunter’s eyes - a little rough.
But they’ll take care of your horse. I can’t say enough good about them.

Headwaters Hounds Hunt Club is temporarily ceasing operations[/h] Many of you probably saw the newspaper article in the Mountain Mail where the County Attorney said that we must cease operations and that she would proceed immediately with an action to remove the foxhounds from the property. The County appeal process allows for the arguments that were made in front of the Board of Appeals to also go in front of a judge, so I am not sure that she has the legal authority to remove the foxhounds. However, based on her threats, I am taking immediate steps to protect our beloved hounds and reduce the number of hounds at the kennels below 30 since, from the staff report, this is apparently the number that the County has issue with.
Mike and Samar Fay have generously agreed to have some of the geriatrics stay with them. Salida allows for up to six animals per household so I will be bringing some of the hounds home with me (Whiskey will be thrilled to be able to sleep on the bed again). Please let me know if you might also be able to help. I am also reaching out to see if we can find homes for some of the adoptable retired hounds. Please do share the attached flyer with anyone who may be interested.
The only foxhunting club activity we had scheduled before the fall season was the County Fair event. I have told the County Fair that we will not be able to support that. We will continue to use the group email list to communicate trail rides and social events that you wish to invite club members to.
I am confident that we will ultimately prevail here - this is just yet another step in the chain of harassment from my neighbors and their friends. News will be posted on the Friends of Headwaters Hounds facebook group as we learn more about the County Attorney’s intent and when we can resume operations, which I fully anticipate will happen before the Hunt Season starts in September.
