Would you purchase a horse with a grade 2 heart murmur to use as a hunter?
Me personally, no.
I would want a cardio workup done first, but yes, assuming nothing alarming was found I would purchase. I have a horse with a high grade heart murmur (4) that always alarms vets when they hear it. He has never shown any signs of a heart problem, although he is retired (for unrelated reasons).
What SAcres said. My human kids both have heart murmurs- I got them checked with an echo, and nothing is wrong.
Get the heart looked at. If it’s nothing, you can buy with no worry.
I’m not too worried about it, but just wondering about potential resell… I understand the mechanics of a heart murmur and my sister also has one, I just wonder what others think when they hear heart murmur. I’m going to talk to my vet and assuming she thinks its fine and the PPE reveals nothing else… We shall see
I guess it depends on how much you like the horse and what its good qualities are. If you’ve found something that knows its job, you like the way it rides, it has the right personality and the vet says it’s not a big deal, then go for it. However, if you are thinking about resale in the near future, you may want to think carefully.
It’s a buyer’s market so people can afford to get very nit-picky because there’s a lot out there to look at.
I did, after a cardiologist looked at it (horse was grade 1 when resting, grade 2 when working). His thoughts were that if he were a racehorse, it would probably be a problem, but not an issue for a hunter/eq career. It wasn’t a big deal to me once it was properly looked into, which yours is as well.
If I were buying the horse with the intention of reselling eventually, definitely not.
