Heart Rate Monitor

Curious if anyone has tried to use a human heart rate monitor on a horse? Instead of buying an equine made heart rate monitor?
The price difference is quite extreme from human to horse.

Thanks!

I was actually thinking of posting something similar…are there wearable monitoring devices for horses? Ive seen something that goes on their legs and tracks strides/lameness type information from it but I was thinking more heart rate/resp rate type info.

I’ve used my Apple Watch though for the heart rate! I think you have to either halve the reading or double it though. I can’t remember without going and doing it again to see what it was :woman_facepalming:t2:

They do have equine ones! Many options out there, they seem to range between $220-$400

Didn’t know you could use your apple watch though!

Yeah! The couple that does endurance had a horse one (not a wearable type) that was being finicky so I popped my watch off and we gave that a try. Picks up the reading just like ours and was accurate once we got the finicky one to read and figured out how to compare the two.

Yes, I have a Hylofit, which comes with both horse and human heart rate monitors. The horse one snaps into something that attaches to the girth. You have to use it in conjunction with an app on your phone or Apple Watch. I’m not sure I would have paid for it but it was a gift. They have unfortunately gone out of business and stopped supporting their own app but if you find a used one you can sync it to other apps intended for human workout tracking. I use Polar Beat, which also uses GPS to track distance, speed, elevation, etc. (The only catch there is you can’t sync both the horse and human at once like with the Hylofit app, but frankly I don’t care about my own heart rate as much as my horse’s so I had never used that feature anyway!)

The EQ clip works well for tracking how a horse is moving and has some very cool stats and is easy to use: https://www.equestic.com/

it does not do heart rate, however.

The hard part about using a human sensor would be applying it properly to the horse.

I have an Equisense device. Mine doesn’t have heart rate, but they have a version with that option. The heart rate sensor is separate from the motion tracking one. They don’t have an Apple Watch app though, so it won’t be easy to monitor in real time because your have to be looking at your phone.
