Heartworm Overdose

Hi everyone,

The dogs were getting their heartworm this morning and during the process the 9lb dachshund ran across the kitchen and stole the 30lb dog’s dose. (Sentinel). The 9 pounder had not yet gotten her pill, so she just got the dose for the 30lb dog.

Do I need to take emergency measures?

It’s 5:45am so the vet’s office is not yet open.

Help?

From their website:
What if I accidentally give my dog more than the prescribed dose?
Sentinel has a very high safety index. The amount of medication in a 6 card package is not enough to harm your dog.

It’s fine.

The only heart worm preventative where an overdose is a big concern is Trifexis.

It will be fine.

Thank goodness. Not to hijack but one day I accidentally gave Oliver (cat) my anti-anxiety pill instead of his prednisone. Almost lost him. Huge, huge vet bill and he almost died.

It has a high safety index unless you have a dog with the MDR1 gene…mostly herding dogs.

Your doxie should be fine.

My 19lb Shiba Inu once stole and ingested an entire box of Heartguard. She didn’t have any ill effects at all - the vet told me she could eat all of the Heartguard in his office and likely not develop anything worse than a touch of indigestion.

Just monitor the dog. You should be totally fine.

And, as I understand it, with white “toes” (such as the Shelties.) My friend has a Silken Windhound she had tested for the MDR1 as he has white “toes”.
