heated clothing

Winter made a rather rude and early arrival in Pennsylvania this week. 20°F roughly.

Talk to me about heated clothing. A coworker recommended Milwaukee brand. Any other suggestions? 8+ hour day in the barn. I think I prefer a vest that I can wear under other clothing but open to other suggestions. Also gloves would be nice.

I bought the Milwaukee vest last year before I went to Aiken. It is great to wear under my big coat. It’s especially nice that the coat has hand-warmer pockets at chest level which happens to be exactly where the heating elements are on the vest! So I could stick one hand at a time in there to thaw while I was holding or doing something with the other.

I was not trying to do barn work however, at most I was holding a horse for someone. And it was definitely above freezing or I would not have been standing outside. I can’t say how it’s going to work at 20F.

Thanks

too hot for anything other than standing around in my experience. I love it when I’m judging though!!

have had heated glove liners (from Power in Motion) for two years now - make a huge difference in my comfort level. It hits -40 here for long periods of time and especially with metal tools (I’m a farrier) my hands were getting too painful to work before them. Just bought a heated jacket (forcefield) to try this winter.

I have a heated vest (found on Amazon). World of a difference. I wear it just on top of a base layer and then a jacket over it. It add just enough core warmth and having it close to me with a layer on top really traps the heat in. I wear it when I am riding, working in the barn, skiing etc.

It gets quite cold where I live so it’s made a big difference for me ( my limit on riding is 15 degrees…)

I purchased a Volt heated vest for riding and skiing. I love it and can’t imagine winters without them anymore. It has different settings and you can turn it off. I have poor circulation so I have a hard time maintaining body heat, especially around my hands and feet.

I looked into heated insoles as well, but haven’t made the jump yet since I have pretty small feet and can’t find any that will fit me. I love heated gloves since I can’t maintain warmth on my own.

I find that if it is cold out, and I must be outside for longer periods of time, that the “hot shot” thingies that go into your gloves and boots are best. There are no batteries, you just crush the little packets so that the contents mix, and they stay warm for a LONG time, like 12 hours long. “Cold” here is -30C. I find that if you can keep the extremities warm with these things, the rest of you is also warm. Especially if you are moving around, working. I have used these things when we go ice fishing, which entails sitting still on a frozen lake for a few hours. If it is cold out, about the last thing you want to do is overheat yourself, and sweat. Because then you will be really cold when wet.

Greetings from northeastern South Dakota - where it regularly gets subzero for weeks on end (which brings up questions of why do we live here but…)

I have a Venture heated vest. LOVE it! I wear it over my base layer and under a sweatshirt and my barn coat when it’s really cold. Keeps me nice and toasty! I rode for about 3 hours outside last weekend in 20 degree temps and had to turn it to low because I got too warm. Boyfriend had their battery heated glove liners. He really liked them but destroyed them after 2 winters of ranching - really not a bad life expectancy considering the abuse he put them through.
