Sophie, not understanding some of your negatives on infrared in this application. That the horse would be cold away from it?
Seems like it would work for warming people and horses while working for a short time.
Wonder if my BO would consider it for crosstie area. Getting ready in winter is the most difficult for me!
I will try to explain in more detail. The problem with this type of heaters is that they only heat the area (surface) onto which the rays directly fall. You probably noticed that it’s worth to step aside a couple of steps from such a heater (in a cafe for example) as soon it gets cold. These temperature changes are warm / cold and are dangerous for horses. To avoid similarly it is necessary to distribute the heaters so that their “rays” overlap each other and there are no “cold” zones, where no rays from either of the heaters get. Do not forget, they do not warm up the air, but only the surface.
(I attach the picture, I apologize for the quality - I’m out of the computer, I had to draw on the phone ) And if (as in the picture) the heat zones will not overlap each other, then the following will happen - in the heat zone, the horse / person warms up, then departs a couple of meters and immediately gets into the cold, which can affect your health due to the temperature drop. It’s like you get warm by the fireplace and then go out into the cold and ice in one of your pajamas.

One of the wood doctor ones, my BO is considering that when she builds a new indoor next year. They own several woodlots, so wood is not an issue for them.
I had a barn with infrared heaters in the isle way. I never had an issue with going from the heated isle to the unheated stalls. If anything the leftover heat kept me warmer in the stall, just like going from a sunny spot to a shaded spot. Your health is not effected from walking through sunny areas and entering shadows… or we would all be dead. I think that for someone riding around the ring, going from heated areas to unheated areas would be no problem at all. Or, just overlap them so you don’t have to worry about it at all.
