More digging shows it happened a few months ago.
Stories like this make me think there needs to be a license to own horses. People are stupid. So stupid.

The instagram video comments said something about heading out immediately after storm, just before dark, or something.

It’s merited, based on the facts given, if those facts are correct. It was a well-known hazard and these two idiots jeopardized the horses’ lives and their own. There is no reason to excuse their risky behavior that put the horses in such a terrible, life-threatening situation.
Hopefully they are stuck with the bill, which is said to be $ tens of thousands.

Riding in the dark, after a storm, on a river known to get big and fast and muddy after storms, on horses that didn’t belong to them, while being entrusted with their care. This wasn’t a calm afternoon ride on a groomed trail.
Stupid. My judgement stands.

Knowing the horse culture in that area makes me wonder if they were stealing them or doing a midnight move.

At least one horse, the one in the helicopter sling photo, I think, was an Iberian breed. Where I live that alone would add to a horse’s value. There is a small but intense market interested in Iberian bred horses, in some areas.
