Hi there, new user. Did a search for recommendations on a good vacuum to use on a horse that loves to roll in the mud.
Latest episode left him caked over, lots of time taken to remove by hand.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably priced, reasonably effective handheld? Not looking for one of the big machines.
Thanks!
Those little one will REALLY eat a mane or tail, should any hairs get caught in the rollers. I really don’t know anyone using little vacuums any more.
We use an old fashioned steel curry on the body and break up mud, then a horse vac to take off dirt. Blowing off curried mud helps, just can get dusty.
Covering the horse while outside seems to work best. Blanket or rainsheet gets mud covered instead of body. Still can have muddy belly, legs, mane and tail. YET horse requires a LOT less grooming time.
The lady that clips our bunch uses a blower, I have an older Belgian mare with hair so thick it curls and she is terrified of water. That blower literally took all the dried mud of her belly in a couple of mins. If you’d be interested I can txt her to get the name of it
I have a gray who wants the be a bay. I tried a shopvac which worked and honestly my horse wasn’t bothered by the noise but I was. I moved onto a Bissell Zing - a small canister vac with bags - and it does everything the big blue box did, but is small, light, and the cord zips itself up with a button. I bought a wide upholstery attachment and for horrible mud days, a curry attachment from Valley Vet. It gets the dirt, dust and dander off, and even better, it doesn’t go from my horse to me. It cost less than $50.
I would think the volume of mud would overwhelm a hand held vac.You can buy a shop vac or household canister vac pretty inexpensively and get a curry attachment. Try Valley Vet for an attachment, they have several options.

Great minds, you know;)
