Helmet Brims and x country

The other day I had a miscommunication with Chewy that ended with me going face first into a x country jump. oops.

While I was ok, I was wearing a One K helmet with a brim and the brim caught on the jump and smashed the rest of the helmet into my nose. It actually cut the bridge of my nose fairly badly and if it had been a little lower probably broken it badly. (it’s still bruised and tender.)

My helmet is donzo so I need a new one and as I look they all seem to have non breakaway brims. I don’t want a skull cap (I have one and it’s so hot) although I will be using my skull cap for x country schooling. I want a nice higher end helmet for when I do hunter/jumper shows and schooling at home (or to x country school when it’s crazy hot) . Are there any with a safe brim?

I did the exact same thing last night in a Trauma Void, so I’d skip that. Here I’d always thought the brim was supposed to break off upon impact? I went out and bought a cheapie Tipp today for schooling, but will still need something a touch nicer for competitions.

All the CO’s I’ve tried have been so darn hot. I’d been thinking about a OneK, but if you just experienced the same thing as I did, I guess that’s not what I want after all…

There are a bunch of lower end helmets that have brims that aren’t integrated into the design. I am currently riding in this one, and I am quite confident that the brim would break or come off in the situation you described.

Troxel has some like that…but check other skull caps. Samshield, One K, KASK and KEP all make them now, so you might find them more breathable.

Sorry for your injury, same thing happened to me. Broke my nose and brow bone. Sucks.

Glad I’m not alone! I need a non skull cap for when I do other shows though, I wish the OneK brim came off easier. They fit me so well and I like the look.

I really like the Troxel Intrepid helmet. The brim will definitely break away, and it is well vented. My daughter has been wearing these for a while, and at $60 you could keep it just for XC if you prefer something else for other occasions.

Wow, I remember being surprised to learn they weren’t legal for eventing and thinking the reasoning was pretty out there. Sounds like it’s actually pretty common! I have a OneK that I really like, but will definitely be jumping in my skull cap from now on.

One K does make a skull cap, for those of you who like their fit.

Not high end, but I like my Ovation which has a brim that could pop off in a fall. I wear it in rated dressage shows.

Brow bone, yikes! I broke my cheek bone and nose on different falls as a teenager. That was a a bunch of suck. It’s amazing we don’t all look like monsters hitting these x-c jumps! It’s kept me away from eventing for about 20 years.
This post is very timely, as I’m helmet shopping, and sticking my toe back in the eventing pool! Any of these helmets come with a face mask? Can I ride in a motorcycle full face? I’m running out of face bones to break.

I have 2 of the Ovation helmets. I love mine. They are light weight, have great ventilation and don’t make me feel like a mushroom head. If I need to replace them I don’t feel guilty since they are pretty darn cheap. The brim is easy to pop off/on. If I hit a xc jump with my face I have no doubt the brim would pop off. I normally hang mine upside down by the chin strap under my saddle. I have bumped the brim a few times while getting my saddle down, the front pops right off and pivots on the sides. It is really easy to just pop it back in place.

As said above, I believe that One K makes a brimless version of their helmet, with ventilation and the same fit.

Ovation makes a traditional looking ( non schooling look) in their competitor model nice for showjumping

Where?

They aren’t legal in the UK.
