Helmet ratings coming soon!

Really interesting! Ratings are expected to be available in November. I know Helmet Awareness Day is usually in September but I wonder if helmet manufacturers will consider another one once ratings are available. (Although maybe the ones whose helmets don’t rate well wouldn’t want to draw any attention to these ratings, lol.)

This is so cool! I bought a MIPS helmet after my young mare tripped and fell with me - that’s the worst I have ever been hurt.

I have my complaints about the helmet (it’s HOTTTT) but I wear it anyways because of the MIPS technology.

I’m super interested to see a Star rating!

It will be interesting to see how those pan out. I hope the MIPS options keep expanding. I have one for show/clinics and one for schooling now. It was PAINFUL to throw out my old OneK show helmet. Probably only worn 25 times but it was going on seven years old and no MIPS.

I’m looking forward to seeing the results!

I was also interested to read the comment about how hair up in the helmet is not thought to be problematic provided the helmet fits that way:

Yes, I read this article. My helmet is a MIPS (about 3 yrs old) but I would hope they come out with something cooler. Plus, it will be nice to have a go-to reference for the best helmets. My brain has fried this summer but like others have said….it is MIPS so I will put up with the hot. Maybe someday, we will have temps less than 95? It will probably go from 95 to 55…isn’t that the way it usually works.

Have you looked at the new Uvex MIPS helmet? It looks pretty well vented compared to my TraumaVoid. It doesn’t even cost a billion dollars. I will probably give one a try for next summer unless something better comes out in the meantime.

Yes, that one looks nice.

I always wondered how the non mips helmets that meet 3 or 4 safety standards compare to the mips.

Oh, that does look promising on the “eff me I didn’t know my head could sweat this much” front!

I’m incredibly curious to see these results, but maybe a bit worried to see where my helmet ranks.

I think I have the worlds funniest shaped head. I remember trying on a samsheild about 5 years ago and couldn’t for the life of me figure out how everyone could wear them. It fit god awful. I’ve never actually had a helmet pinch like it did. That was an eye opener that not all helmets fit the same.

When the trauma void was released I was super gung-ho to buy one. Luckily, I could try one on before purchasing and it also didn’t fit quite right. A local-ish tack shop carries lots of brands so I fortunately had a wide variety to try on. I ended up with a kask, which I love, and seriously fit me like a glove. Was previously wearing a CO, which in hindsight just fit “ok”.

A study like this makes me question if Kask ranks poorly, is it still better than a mediocre fitting helmet with MIPS technology?

I have the same basic question, but about a different brand. I have a GPA head. I have yet to find any brand that fits me as well, including the current MIPS lineup. And I have had to conclude that a helmet with less advanced safety features that will stay in the right place to take impact is going to do me more good than a helmet that has more advanced features but that I can’t trust to stay where I put it.

GPA can solve this problem for me by having a highly-ranked helmet and also adopting MIPS technology in their newer models.
