Helmet ratings

I thought many would find this interesting: https://vtx.vt.edu/articles/2022/12/ictas-equestrian-helmet-ratings.html

Virginia Tech did a study on equestrian helmets specifically and discusses the results. It’s promising that there is a history there of spurring some improvements.

Here is the shortcut to the ratings if you want to skip the article: https://helmet.beam.vt.edu/equestrian-helmet-ratings.html

I wish there were more. Found out a loved one’s helmet is at the bottom of the list and found the one at the top, but it wasn’t the one at the top after all… and the one I was looking at wasn’t on the list. Anyway. Keep on keepin’ on!

There are several discussions already running on COTH about the work done by VT under “Announcement of Helmet Study Release Date”.

The key point, to me, and one that seems to be missing in the VT results, is that ANY helmet is far, far better than none in protecting one’s brain from injury. The various tests by various bodies do test different things so possibly the best thing is to find a helmet that meets multiple test standards.
