Helmet Shape: Round vs Oval

This is probably a ridiculous question. Is there a way to tell if you have a more round or oval shaped head in regards to helmet fit?

I am in the market for a new helmet and tack shops are not currently open. I ordered a Charles Owen from SmartPak that didn’t fit quite right and shipped it back. The refund took a full 3 weeks to post. Unfortunately, I can’t purchase and try multiple helmets at once.

My previous helmet was a Samshield Shadowmatte and it fit perfectly. I’d like a wider brim this time, so I’m considering a Miss Shield, Kask Wide Brim, or KEP Polo Visor. The CO SP8 wide peak did not fit.

Thank you!

Sometimes you can tell by appearance and other times you need to try different helmets on. A round shape is wider side-side than a oval shape, which is longer front-back.

Which Charles Owen helmet did you purchase? Usually Charles Owen are built move oval than round and the round shape needs to be specially ordered or selected when purchasing. I’m not as familiar with the Samshield fit, but I’ve heard they run more round.

In which way did the Charles Owen not fit? was it tight side-side or front-back? Or too big either way?

Charles Owen (CO) Does however fit differently from many helmets in terms of the padding inside. They normally have much more padding than other competing brands, thus the initial fit is often fairly tight and sometimes it can even be uncomfortable at first. You want those helmets to be snug though because the padding within a CO does pack down more than say a tipperary or One-k would over time. To measure for a CO, you’d need to measure the circumference around the largest part of your head, where the helmet would sit. For reference, I measure 54cm, which is a 6 5/8. When I tried it on, it did feel uncomfortably tight, so I went up to a 6 3/4 which was still quite tight. I’ve had the helmet for a while now, but it packed down so much that it now rocks and I had to out an anti-rocker in it. That being said, it is still one of the best fitting helmets I’ve had.

I tried the CO SP8 and it was too large. I ordered a 6 3/4, which I thought I had in the Samshield (it stated 54 / 6 3/4”) on the box and tag. I couldn’t tell where it didn’t fit because it was just overall too large.

If you have one, It would be more accurate to measure with a measuring tape. I find brands can often vary enough to make a difference and aren’t always exact on sizing charts. It’s possible too that that particular helmet from CO runs larger. That being said, you could only go down one more size in the CO to a 6 5/8 which is for a 54cm head in CO. If the 6 3/4 was as big as it sounds, then I doubt the 6 5/8 would fit.

I know a few people who have the Miss shield and they love theirs and being that your previous Samshield fit well, you’d probably be inclined to like the Miss shield too. Unfortunately I’m not really familiar with the fit of the Kask or KEP either, but hopefully someone else here can answer that.

This is completely unscientific, but I have found that people with oval heads get the red marks on their foreheads after wearing the helmets for a while, and people with round heads feel pressure on the sides of their head (especially when wearing a more oval shaped helmet), while the oval heads feel pressure almost exclusively at the front and back.

I hope I’m not too late to answer your question, but there isn’t a hard and fast rule for determining head shape (oval vs. round). You can sometimes tell based on appearance though. I worked at a tack store for 3 years and often fit helmets so I got used to seeing a lot of different shaped heads. Based on what you said about the fit of the Charles Owen, it sounds like your head isn’t that oval because they typically fit more oval. What about the fit wasn’t working? Was it squeezing the side of your heads too much?
Since you were in a Samshield before and if you liked the fit, my recommendation would be to stay with that brand. The Kask fits more like the Samshield but I often found for people who fit in a Samshield that it put too much pressure on the forehead. I fit in a Samshield great but the Kask gave me a headache. The Kep might also be an option for you and they have different shaped liners that you can interchange, round vs. oval.

The Charles Owen was just overall too large. Do you happen to know if the Samshield fits more like a round liner for the KEP or the oval liner for the KEP? I’d like to try to KEP polo visor but I’m wondering if I should just wait for this mess to pass and go to a store to try a wide variety.

I have the a KEP with the polo visor and wear it with their oval liner. I also fit into One K long Oval. My guess is that if you like the Samshield fit, you would want the KEP with the round liner. FWIW I really like my KEP–it’s so comfortable and the option to open or close the vent is wonderful!
