Hello! I am looking for recommendations on helmet visors. Which one would be the most effective and pretty? Are there any USEF regulations against wearing it in the warmup ring?
Samshield makes a polo visor that fits really well on my OneK helmet. It’s pricey, but it stays put much better than the fabric visors, and does provide a lot of extra shade. Probably won’t work on every helmet, though.
I have a Soless visor and I really like it. It’s a sunscreen type material and not solid so you have decent peripheral vision. I use it on a helmet that is not velvet type material (like a speed air) and it stays in place quite well (you can tell it would totally “stick” to velvet type helmets but I was less sure about the other type, it has not been an issue). It also comes with a no fly away clip thing that is supposed to keep it from flying away. Full disclosure, I failed to read the not that clear directions, put the clip on wrong, immediately donated clip to the arena and haven’t bought a replacement since my newest horse is headed to CDE not the jumping world so I can’t speak for how sticky it is over jumps or if that clip fits all brims.
It’s not cheap, but it lives on my helmet all summer and in my non AC tack room year 'round for the last 20 months or so and is still
Yup, I prefer my Soless to my Equivisor. The E-visor seems very heavy to me, and the Soless is practically weightless. It lets in more filtered light whereas the E-visor blocks pretty much everything.
I solved my flyaway brim drama by getting a First Lady. I wish the brim was a titch bigger but it works for what I need it to.
The Soless visor is a godsend for me as well. Stays in place in everything but gale-force winds, provides lots of shade without killing peripheral vision. I wear it at rated shows here in Canada in the warmup with no issues (though I know that doesn’t answer your question re USEF.)
I have an Equivisor and find that I don’t use it a lot because I live in a very windy area. I hate the pull of the wind on the visor when I’m riding. I don’t feel like it will come off, I just don’t like the pull against my head/neck. Oddly, though, I find it perfect to wear when I’m not riding and have taken it with me when auditing clinics or even warn it at a wine festival. That sucker will NOT move when it’s on my head and not on a helmet.
My friend has a brown one that I used once at a clinic (I was being a little vain, wearing plum breeches, with brown half chaps and my champagne brown GPA…I didn’t want to wear black that day). Day one I had worn my black and was just fine. Day 2 I wore the brown and man, it made my neck hurt…it was so much heavier in comparison. Day 2 I used the black and will never go back.
I have an Equivisor, I haven’t had any problems so far jumping or in the wind. It’s been pretty breezy here in Florida and my arena is at the top of a hill and catches all the wind.
I have a Soless! I’ve taken a head dive in it and the thing still didn’t come off. I love it. I abuse it. It’s my fav thing. I will say I rarely use the clip.
I have a hide a helmet cover. They aren’t a well known brand and definitely aren’t in vogue in the h/j world but it stays on really well. I have galloped horses and jumped in it with no issues at all and it keeps the sun off my face. The equivisors and the like didn’t do as well a job and didn’t protect the back of my neck like I wanted it to.
I’ve seen the Samshield polo visor used in the show ring at Spruce Meadows (non FEI rated class) not sure if USEF has different rules or not but I don’t see it being an issue in the warm up ring.
