Helmets and Hair Dye

I’m probably going to dye my hair soon (purple and blue) and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with hair dye and helmets… I’m afraid it might rub off on the inside of the helmet. I’ve had dyed hair in the past but I got it done at a salon so it wasn’t an issue.

TIA!

Hmm… I used to dye my hair hot pink and don’t recall having any problems. However I think during the summer when I got more sweaty I would put a bandana over my hair (covered pretty much all of it as it was very short!) because I was paranoid about the colour bleeding out. Maybe try something like that for your first couple rides and see how it goes, but you should be fine!

I’ve never had an issue with anything done professionally in a salon or bought at the drugstore in a box, but I tend to stick to more ahhh, neutral colors;) I’m sure anything permanent will be fine, it would be the temporary dyes I would worry about coming off when your head got sweaty.

Please post pictures when you done. I am very curious about how you are going to incorporate those two colors together. Highlights, lowlights, skunkstripe? I MUST know!!!

Also, I dye my hair at home, but I have never had an issue with color transferring to my helmet.

Of course I’ll post pics! I was thinking streaks, but sorta blended? Like some purple, some blue, kinda mixed up. Manic Panic has some awesome colors I’ve been dying (no pun intended) to try

Manic Panic in particular will bleed if you sweat for at least a few (or more) days, and might–depending on the color and how well you are able to rinse–rub off on a lighter colored helmet liner at first even if you don’t.

Even the more, um, intense salon colors (I do a violet and red combo) will stain towels for a day or two, and if you’re really sweaty might get on your helmet.

Wear a bandana or something under your helmet if you want to be sure, and be sure to use dark colored or old towels.

Also, I still don’t think there’s a Manic Panic blue that lasts very long–they fade like crazy.

Roger that … Manic Panic will rub off on everything, and fade like crazy.
Unless they’ve improved it in the last, umm, 20 some-odd years.
Looks cool when it’s fresh & new though.

LOL!!

Not sure about the blue, but if the purple is anything like my burgundy expect it to fade… Unless it gets wet though it does not transfer.

Haha, this thread was a fun surprise to read this morning! Reminds me of a girlfriend that I ride with; she does hers a new wild color every month. The most she did at one time that I can remember photos of included something like 4 colors maybe. I’ve never thought about color bleed into the helmet… I guess I don’t have much to add, but I’m interested to see how it turns out!

raises hand My hair was dyed electric blue for over 5 years. I used Special Effects (hottopic- <don’t use manic panic>). I did show on the Intercollegiate team so I was more worried about hiding the blue from the judges. I ended up taking 2 headband like extensions made of fake black hair and put them diagonally across my head so that both my ears were covered. Then I took two thick black hairnets and put them over. Once I got my hair under the helmet no one knew that I had blue hair. It did take me about 45 minutes to do my hair, but it was worth it. I think I got better ribbons when my hair was blue!

My hair never bled on the helmet (and I was worried at first since I had just gotten my GPA for showing). I only dyed it 1x a month so I’d make sure to rinse well right after. However, I did have a blue pillow in the morning, and I’m sure the dorm cleaning staff hated me since I dyed the shower stalls blue… oops

Have fun with it & post lots of pics!!! I miss dying my hair, but after 5 years I became broke (from that and being a college student).

Thanks for the suggestions! I’m not showing currently so the judging part isn’t an issue… I’m not sure what my trainer will think though

I’ve tried Special Effects in the past, it hasn’t worked super well (of course, this could be because my mom did my hair for me and probably didn’t use enough dye…)

Make sure you bleach it first if you want it to stay in. I would bleach mine maybe once every 3 months. It definatly makes it stick better. (and it didn’t kill my hair). I would also put the dye in and leave it in “overnight” (shower cap on). A little messy but it made the color super vibrant! (ok so my college “overnight” was midnight-5am when I had to go to the barn to do chores…)

I think that is why my coach took so long to let me on the team, I was a bit on the freaky side  But hey, my hair matched the blue ribbon!

Wild hair color lover here! In general, no, there isn’t an issue except that you need to remember that the bright colors will leach from your hair longer than more natural hair colors. Once you are 3-5 shampoos past coloring, you should no longer see color in the water on your shower floor (or your pillowcase if you tend to shower in the PM and go to bed with a wet/damp head, LOL!). At that point, you probably won’t have any leaching onto your helmet, either.

But even if you do, it probably won’t be noticeable, and certainly no worse than the usual head sweat.

I have never had my hair color bleed into my helmet. That being said, even going with colors manic panic offers, I have always had it done at a salon. The molecules in the red colors are larger and will fade faster because of it, or so I was told by my hair person. I’ve also never would care if it bled on the inside of my helmet.

Unlike some of the others, I did have issues with the dyes bleeding into the liner of my helmet, the harness of the helmet (this was back in the days of the plastic harnesses on unapproved hunt caps…if you kept them on), and hair nets. Special Effects (SFX) dyes were my go-to back in the day, instead of Manic Panic, so that may have been a factor.

I’ve got purple hair and I haven’t had an issue with it bleeding onto the helmet (at least not last year with Arctic Fox… i haven’t ridden yet with the current brand that I have been using). I did have an issue with purple sweat lol! It would stain my forehead if it was a fresher dye (up to a week or two after dyeing).

I have more of an issue of the color transferring onto my clothes and pillow (but if I cared, I would stop lol!). White is not your friend.
