Helmets with MIPS Technology

At age 60+, I confess that my first priority for a helmet is safety. For the past couple of years, I have worn the Trauma Void EQ3 with MIPS technology. I like the helmet, but it has not been an ideal fit for me. I have a classic Charles Owen oval head. I have been waiting for more choices with MIPS technology, and now I have some. Trauma Void has come out with a new model, the Lynx, which has a dial fit and is advertised as being a better choice for those with oval heads.

Charles Owen has also come out with “My PS” MIPS helmet. I am very interested in this one and am wondering if anyone has worn it. If this one fits like my old CO JR8, I’ll be all over it. Trying these on at a tack shop isn’t feasible. I have no tack shop within driving distance. I visit tack shops at shows, but they usually don’t carry the MIPS helmets. I will have to order online and send back if it doesn’t fit.

For those interested in looking at the helmets, here’s the one I have, the Trauma Void EQ3:

Here’s the Trauma Void Lynx:

Here’s the CO “My PS”:

The CO also comes in a wide-brim model. I’m not interested in that one, but some of you might be. I wish this one came in a microfiber finish as I prefer that for showing, but fit is really what I am interested in here.

Any comments?

Have you tried your EQ3 helmet w/ the other liner that came with it? It’s a liner for an oval fit head- it’s thicker on the sides than at the front & back.

Mine came with two liners, and I think they are both the same. I can’t tell the difference.

I have the Trauma Void EQ3 and love it. Get lots of compliments and inquiries about it too.

The oval one is stitched into 3 separate “pillows” on each side. The regular one isn’t divided on the sides. The oval one might say “thick” on it but that might just be on the invoice. I do great with the regular fit but put in the oval liner once by accident & it changed the fit so much I couldn’t get the helmet off my head fast enough.

I just bought the MyPS. I have an oval head, so I never bothered trying the Trauma Void. I fit comfortably in a CO GR8 and V8 previously. I am finding the MyPS to be a bit tight in my regular CO size, especially with my hair up. It feels especially tight on my forehead. I guess it may still squish down, but I’m still unsure if I should go up a size.

I have no info on fit, but I do know that some online tack shops (including Riding Warehouse that you linked) has free shipping and returns. So there’s no risk in ordering one from them and giving that helmet a try.

The 2 liners are NOT the same!!! I own 3 Trauma Void’s and I can swear to you they’re very different.

The Lynx does fit a hair different and I think it would help to fit some ones that didn’t fit in the EQ3.

Wow, I got two regular fit liners with my helmet. Mine have no “pillows” such as you describe. Sounds as if I should get an oval one. I’ll have to try to figure out where to do that. Maybe we could swap! (What size is your helmet?)

As I said above, I know I got two identical liners with mine. It must have been a mistake by whoever packed my helmet for shipment.

My Charles Owen AYR8 has been the best fitting helmet I have owned. However, the ventilation is not great. My schooling helmet needed replaced, so I decided to order the EQ3 and the Lynx from Riding Warehouse to try and few months back. The two helmets fit very differently. I liked that the Lynx was a deeper helmet and it fit well front to back, but it was very roomy side to side. The EQ3 fit ok with the one liner, but fits like a glove with the other. Definitely try the other liner before giving up on the helmet completely.

Good to know. I have short hair, so if I order, I think I’ll start with my regular size.

I did watch the CO presentation on this helmet (linked below), and they recommend getting two different size liners for wearing hear up and down. I don’t know where to buy the liners. I inquired of Riding Warehouse, and they carry the helmet but not the replacement liners.

Actually, I get compliments and inquiries, too. It’s a good-looking helmet.

If it fits you. It looks terrible on me. It sits on the top of my head and looks stupid.

(my regular helmet…see, I don’t have the longest head you’ve ever seen…I promise

I was excited about the Trauma Void…and even won one in a contest, but it was such a terrible fit, I couldn’t keep it. I hae the same problem with a lot of baseball hats. Certain styles just sit on top of my head and don’t go down far enough…

Some of the 1st EQ3s that shipped only had 1 liner. (I’m a distributor & some of the first few I received were like that). Not sure if that was a mistake like you getting 2 regular fit liners or if they only later started including 2. I’ve already swapped my oval liner with someone for their regular liner unfortunately.

They do sell spare liners, although I don’t think you can buy them directly from the Back on Track website. I would email or call the contact info from the TraumaVoid website & ask about getting one. They retail for $12.95 so won’t break the bank. The email listed on the website goes to Maria & she’s super nice & helpful.

^^^Thanks–I emailed TraumaVoid already from their website and inquired. I received an answer saying someone would be in touch shortly. I am so pleased that I started this thread as I didn’t realize the liner might actually help my helmet fit better.

I just bought both the EQ3 (for when I ride with hair down) and the Charles Owen MYPS (for when I ride with hair up). I have long, thick hair and riding with it up really changes the fit/style of helmet I need. For reference, the EQ3 replaced my OneK (hair down) and the MYPS replaced the Charles Owen Ayr8 (hair up). The only helmets I can get on my head with hair up are the Charles Owens, but they don’t fit at all with the hair down. The EQ3 (with the standard liner) and the MYPS do fit very differently. I did not try the EQ3 with the oval shaped liner to see if I could make that fit with my hair up. The MYPS is an odd looking helmet in person. It reminds me of the old fashioned polo helmets a bit, it has that bowl shaped look but also has cut outs above the ears. It’s not the most attractive helmet but the safety was important to me.

I used to have a CO which fit very well, and now have the EQ3, which is also a decent fit. Not sure if that is any help though, I apologize.

I did want to say: I had a bad fall about 5 months ago, landed on my head/shoulder, destroyed my shoulder and my EQ3 helmet had some pretty good dings in it - I didn’t have so much as a headache. Replaced it with another EQ3  Also, BOT has a really good crash replacement warranty, I got my replacement at a 40% discount off MSRP, many other manufacturers are only 10-25% off.

NB re: oval fit on the EQ3: some (but not all) of Charles Owen GR8 people (oval shaped heads) needed to go up one size on the EQ3 w/ the oval liner compared to the size of GR8 they had. This was wearing their hair the same with both.

Thank you for the info! I’m going to try to investigate about these liners!
