Helmets - your favorite way of putting your name inside them

The plain black riding helmet owned by so many riders, maybe made by Ovation or Troxel … of course a marker on the size tag works, but are there other more fun ways to put the owner’s name inside the helmet? That don’t catch on hair, and don’t itch, of course.

Asking because board barns and lesson stables are rife with these helmets that are sometimes stored on site. It’s like going to summer camp – best to have one’s name on everything.

Any showing is schooling shows only. So maybe the name doesn’t have to be invisible inside, just not distracting if its outside. One rider wants to use letter stickers to put a tasteful rendition of her first name across the back.

Feel free to share photos of your favorite ideas.

Not inside, but I have a vinyl cutter and monogram everything I own. My helmet monogram has lasted for years and can be peeled off should I ever want to do a rated show (I won’t). There are plenty of color options that wouldn’t even be noticeable but would be identifiable, think black glitter or black matte.

I have never labelled my helmet as mine.

I just make sure I put it away in my stuff as soon as it is removed from my head.

@trubandloki has a point. In 50+ years of riding, I have never labeled a helmet. Mine get put into a mesh bag to dry out. I stored them in a tack locker when I was a boarder, and now hung on a hook in my tack room. Never experienced an issue.

Part of good horsemanship is taking care of your tack, and helmets are very essential pieces of tack!

I feel like the ways I handle gear and organization as an adult around other adults are just very different from how I dealt with gear as a tween around other tweens. For one, as an adult I am completely in control of my personal space, routines, and time frame, etc. As a tween most of your life is being scooted along by adults telling you to do this and that and hurry up and put things down etc. So I think having names on helmets is probably a great idea for that age group. I like the idea of contrasting texture black letters along the back edge.

I keep my horse at a friend’s backyard and keep my helmet there on a specific rack…but…this thread as me thinking we should label the helmets. Myself and my friend are pretty much find but the grandkids (hers, not mine) and the husband (hers, not mine) have trouble finding the correct helmet.

Depending on the material of the harness, can you use a fabric pen? I’m thinking it would be good for helmet’s like this:

A friend used a fabric pen to recolor her horse’s galloping boots and it lasted a long time, so may be good for helmets as well.

It would probably work with this kind of helmet harness as well, but harder to make clear letters:

Great ideas!

The sticker name in the same color as the helmet is creative for a low-key easy-id. The material could be fun!

The fabric pen would be great for labeling sizes and such on other things as well.

What a neat idea for a lot of design things!

I just wrote my name on the inside lining with a felt tip pen.

And then realised that I’d had a total brainfart and misspelled my own name!! How did that happen???!!!

I had the original carbon fiber Tipperary, the kind that looked like a cross between a bike racing helmet and a IMG_4120 giant June bug. I though for sure it would look different enough but one hot day I had it on the rack with my saddle, bridle etc at the lesson barn, turned around to fetch something, went to pick up my helmet and it was gone.

I found it flopping loosely on a kids head out in the arena. Repossessed it at the end of the lesson, switched my lesson time back to the all adult group. Basically nothing will work besides keeping it on your head unless there’s some control/education over the helmet using people at the barn.

ETA this came out funny, but tbh it works to express just how different that helmet looked than all the CO and troxels at that barn.

I’ve never labeled mine, but wonder if using a light colored permanent marker on the plastic strip attached to the dial in the back of it would work? It wouldn’t be noticeable when worn, especially if written on the inside part of it, assuming your helmet has the dial-fit option.
