Help a girl out! What is a barrel racing derby?

I’m a photographer and I have been asked to photograph a barrel race that has a derby class. The only thing the prize list says is that “2 horses will run at the same time”. Does that mean that 2 horses are running on the same track or will there be 2 separate sets of barrels that they run on side by side?

Help, I’m so confused. I’m trying to figure out if I need to bring an assistant and another camera or if I can get everything with what I have packed already.

Thanks!

Call management for more.

A Derby is whatever the ones organizing it want it to be.

You may find a barrel racing derby on youtube, but unless is organized by that same group you signed up with, it still may not be the same.

Typically if the barrel race has a “derby” class, it has to do with age of the horse.

You’ll need to double check with the show management but usually derby means the horse has to be 7 years old or younger, and did not compete in futurities as a 4-year-old. But check with the specific rules of your show.

If it says that 2 horses are run at the same time, I’ve never been to a barrel race that does this, but they may have 2 arenas to run simultaneously to get through the entries quicker. For safety reasons, they will not have 2 patterns set up inside the same arena; nor will 2 horses run in the same arena at the same time. Again, I would ask management.

If it says two horses at the same time I wonder if it’s a Camas Prairie Stump type race?

Hmmm. Ok, I’ll have to ask then.

The derby is not divided out by age, at least not that I see on the prizelist.

Thanks!

Oh, that is a possibility, but nearly impossible to photograph on ones own. sigh.
