Help for equine repro course in MD

Hello fellow breeders! I’m helping with an equine reproduction course being taught at Cecil College in MD. The plan is for the students to spend the first 7-8 weeks learning in the basics in the classroom, and then after spring break we’d like them to visit different places to get as much of a feel for different breeding operations and any techniques they can view etc. This is, overall, a more basic Repro course, not to the end that it is for vet techs or pre vet (though some of the students may go in that direction). In general it’s more of a starting point, get them the basics, and if they decide to continue in this direction, they can get more detailed info later, either hands on or at a more advanced school where they have 4 year degrees and their own breeding facilities etc.

So this is where I need your help! We are near Fair Hill MD, and I already have they scheduled to visit Hilltop Farm and SBS, as well as one other local breeder and possibly Hoffman Center at New Bolton. I also plan to have them “follow” a mare on marestare, so they can hopefully catch a live foaling, and get excited about it etc, but I would like them to have 2-3 more places to possibly visit.

Anyone know of someone else I can contact in this area? I am pretty sure it’s too early in the year, but any kind of breed show or inspection would also work. Or if not, anyone going to have a horse or 2 on mare stare that they would like as a potential for my students to watch and follow? The foal should be “due” between mid March to Late April.

And for visits, ideally we would do them on a Sat or Sunday. I’d also be open to a place that a single student could visit if they couldn’t make a date etc. I’ve had all of these students before, and they are all good, trustworthy kids.

TIA, any help, ideas, thoughts would be great! Many of them have had zero breeding exposure, so I just think seeing it is way more interesting then reading about it and looking at pictures.

I assist teaching an equine repro class at a small college as well. If you are thinking about a trip to New Bolton, you should look into their short courses. We have sent students in the past and they are well run and informative courses.
In addition to Hilltop and SBS, we have also visited Rolling Stone Farm and High Point Hanoverians and both were a lot of fun for the students.

Country Life Farm in Bel Air/Fallston (thoroughbreds)
Northview Stallion Station in Chesapeake City (thoroughbreds)
Winbak Farm in Chesapeake City (standardbreds)

You won’t find greater volumes of horses bred in the area and they are great folks to work with. I imagine they’d be more than happy to accommodate you for at very least a field trip. I also bet they may let you observe a live cover at Country Life or Northview, as opposed to just collection for AI.

All of those farms are foaling NOW, too. February/March/April are their busiest foaling months.

Also, talk to Dr. Jon Palmer at New Bolton about visiting the NICU. They also have a volunteer “foal sitter” program at the NICU that’s open to the public if that’s something you’d like your students to pursue.

I’d be more than happy to help you out with any of those contacts! Just PM me…

Thanks guys! I work at New Bolton, so I will talk to Dr. Palmer, but I will definetly look into those other farms and shoot them a message.

I thought about the short courses at NBC, but I haven’t been able to find any listed for this year, they were all for last year, but I will mention them to the class if I see them updated.

I really wished that there were some breed shows/inspections before the beginning of May, I think seeing evaluation of youngstock would be valuable, but I may just make some of the information for the summer ones available to them, and let them decide if they would like to go on their own.

But great list so far!
