Help for the anxious "bi-polar" horse

@16 Hands, I don’t think so. I just googled it and it showed up on Amazon, as well as Allvet and Heartland Vet Supply, and made a ‘test’ order with Heartland with no question asked about a 'scrip, so I think you’re good to go!

That said, I did buy it from my vet, but then, I’m in Canada and things are a little different  up here, eg we can’t buy Ulcerguard, only GG through the vet, but we CAN use Previcoxx.

ETA: farmvet also has it, and again, no request for a prescription.

OP, what does your vet say?

A horse like this i think from experience, is telling you that things are happening in his environment that make him anxious. This could be something you don’t see. My horse had a hard time making it around the arena the other night because a neighbor across the street and down a property put a bag of something out by the side of the road. My horse noticed it right away, I didn’t and later thought “for gods’ sakes, it’s a freaking bag about 2000 feet away!”. Perhaps insects are bothering him, or there are now fire ants in his pasture or a newly established fox den on the other side of his pasture, or he’s picking up on the vibes of a nervous neighbor, or there are new neighbor dogs now coming into the pasture (these are all things that happened at our barn). It’s my experience that there’s generally a reason when a sensitive horse gets very nervous, even if we can’t readily see it, and it’s best to address that reason if we can.

Good golly. Tumor? No, I had not thought about that. He is not grey, very dark bay almost black. A few weeks (maybe 4?) back when he was doing this - stressing, kicking, he went out in the arena and I caught him laying down. Not rolling, just laying there. My mare was standing over him with a very worried look on her face. I thought well he’s not laying in his stall sleeping… I keep a good amount of bedding in there but this time I really did it up. Next day, he had shavings all over him and he was calm and happy. In discussing it all with a friend, we figured maybe pain was an issue, super deep bedding might help. It did. So I’ve kept it up, and he’s continued to lie down at night, until the last couple days. Back to pacing in circles, sweating, frantic to get out, (but can’t out-walk him to come back in either), not eating (except he will eat alfalfa).

My gut… says this may be a pain issue. He is a very stoic sort. I also know he has cataracts and I do need them re-evaluated to see if they have progressed.
Feed - he has free choice hay in front of him 24/7 so that is not his issue.
He is a cribber (controlled with a collar); was not always controlled hence his front teeth are nubs and his bottom teeth are protruding.
His poop is relevant to the amount he’s eating, it’s normal in color size quantity etc. He is grinding his hay fine, I don’t see any large pieces coming thru (he is current on dental).

Yesterday, he was quiet and eating normally but very subdued. I did start him on the Nexium.

I cannot control every aspect of his environment. We have occasionally moved barns and it still happens. He is surrounded by quiet, safe horses whom he generally really likes. He’s got me, day in and day out, I am not flaky or flighty by any means. I keep a general schedule (meaning within 15/20 mins or so) and like I said he always has feed. I know his likes and dislikes and I cater to them - bedding, blankets, etc.

I appreciate the feedback and support!! It helps.

You might want to try CBD pellets. It will help with anxiety and pain/inflammation if that is an issue as well
