I’ve been doing my nighly barn chores and noticed my geldings penis has not fully retracted for a couple of hours now. I was brushing him and he tends to drop when I do that, then as I was stall cleaning, feeding etc I noticed that the outer folds of his sheath never went all the way back in. Checked up on him again and its still the same. The penis isn’t really out, just the outer fold is sort of bunched near his sheath. I know a penis that won’t retract at all is an emergency, but should I be emergency- vet-concerned here? He has to be sedated for sheath cleaning, does not like me messing with his junk in the trunk, and hasn’t had it cleaned for 6 mos or so.
Girl reach up in there and see what’s going on! No seriously. No gloves, no problem, you’ve had your hands in worse!

Yeah the sheath not fully retracting is an emergency. I would do a check for ticks, any beans, swelling etc and call the vet. Can you cold hose it?

How does the rest of the horse look? If he acts fine, I would just keep an eye on him. And get a tq asap so you can clean his sheath
and thoroughly feel around for anything that doesn’t belong. I’m a fan of mineral oil over soap for this. Good luck!

Do you see any pee leakage? Once my gelding was not fully retracting and I saw that there were drops of pee coming constantly out, called the vet and it was a mild cystitis.
If he doesn’t like you touching it, I’d try the hose option. Just to see if he “can” take it back in.
Thankful my crazy as heck gelding who is afraid of everything and difficult in most all situations could care less if I do a full on cleaning and/or pick off the dried skin, etc. He does not care one bit.
How hot is it? What’s he like today?
It doesn’t sound like he can’t retract things to the point it’s an emergency, but a picture would help a lot.
Yes, when the cold water hits, they have a tendency to suck things back in place rather hasty. Plus it’s good in case of any swollen bits.
