Help Identifying a Brand

I originally posted this in the Missing Horses forum, but it was suggested to me that I should post it here.

The horse with the brand in question is called Tori. We know almost nothing about her past, but we are fairly certain she was a Premarin mare. We don’t know her breeding, but we think she is a Quarter Horse/Belgian cross (typical for PMU horses). We do know that she is 13 years old, and came from Canada.

Anyway, she has two brands (technically one brand, but printed twice) on her left shoulder. I’ll link a picture below, but it looks like a capital S (although it might be a 5) with the ^ symbol over it. Does anyone recognize this brand? One poster, in response to my thread over in Missing horses, said that the ^ symbol is called a “rafter”. This would make the brand translate to “rafter over S”, or something along those lines. Does this ring any bells for anyone? I would really like to find out this horse’s history and information.

Thanks everybody!

Did she possibly come from Rafter 6 ranch in Alberta?

It looks like they had a ranch brand much like what you posted.

In Saskatchewan, that brand belongs to:

Name: SPIESS JOHN GRAHAM
Town: SWIFT CURRENT
Brand Description: HALF DIAMOND OPENING DOWN OVER S
Brand Position: Left Hip
Expiry Date: Dec 31, 2015
Brand Type: Horse
Brand Status: Active
Brand Cycle: 4 Year Brand

Or possibly (though I think that looks more an S than a 6)

Name: MCARTHUR EMMETT
Town: REGINA
Brand Description: HALF DIAMOND OPENING DOWN OVER 6
Brand Position: Left Hip
Expiry Date: Dec 31, 2012
Brand Type: Horse
Brand Status: Suspense
Brand Cycle: 4 Year Brand

Of course, the horse could be from a different province, but this is a place to start.

Thanks everyone!! The rafter over 6 brand looks similar to Tori’s brand, but I think hers looks more like a 5, or an S, than a 6. But, it is a place to start! It is awfully similar…

furlong 47, are you finding these in any sort of registry? This sounds promising, except for the fact that the brand is on her left shoulder. I’ll keep looking!
