Hello everyone! I have a mare who will not stop itching her tail bone and she is ultimately ruining her tail and bruising herself. Her tail is becoming a patchy mess and her skin is turning raw (not to the point of bleeding YET) I have tried wormer for pinworms and I have tried washing her tail and cleaning “under there” the best I could to remove any dirt. None of this worked.
We have trees in our pasture so even if I starting using electricity on the fences, it wouldn’t stop the itching. She only uses trees anyways.
I wouldn’t be very concerned with this because she isn’t making herself bleed, but I am crazy about keeping manes and tails to perfection. I braid her mane and wash it almost once a week. I also braid her tail in the winter and I am currently waiting for a new tail bag in the mail .
Does anyone else have experience with this and have any ideas of what could be going on? Any tips on cleaning her tail and “under there”? Maybe I’m just not cleaning it correctly? Thank you so much.
