Help Me Decide to Pull the Trigger (or Not) on a Truck

Well, the time has come that my husband and I are truck shopping.

We just sold our very old and unreliable F-150 and the current replacement contender is as follows:

2016 extended cab F-150 4x4
Very clean. One previous owner. 22,000 miles.
Has tow package including something called “pro trailer backup assist”. Rated to haul more than my trailer and horses weigh.
Asking price is $29,900

Pros:
Low mileage. Seems well taken care of. Still under warranty. Big enough for my needs. Fits in my garage. Backup camera to help me hook up.

Cons:
Extended cab instead of four door (though I do like the extra bed length because of that). A bit more than we were planning on spending, but way less miles than I thought we could afford.

What do you all think? Help me decide!

They let us have it for the weekend, so I was going to hook up tomorrow and see how it hauled the trailer around.

Why would you want to shoot a truck?

I hate car/truck shopping…

what trim level ? and engine? from bottom to top trims can vary over $10K

I just check locally a new 2020 F150 four wheel drive XL trim level with optional packages including the towing package is $35k

I also very much hate vehicle shopping.

It’s an XLT so nothing special.

That is my current pickup, except it is crew cab and 6 1/5’ bed with spray-on liner, has always worked great, still does, has double the miles of yours, so very few.
We have the more aggressive tires on it, our roads are not very good and it has made it thru very muddy spots better than many.
Has pulled out 16’ GN trailer loaded with cattle without knowing it was back there.
Has that hitch assist, have not used it, but those that do say is great.

Just be sure they didn’t drive it much because of other than something not working quite right.
Always be aware new and especially used, any machinery may quit right after you buy it, is how it is with machinery, it works until it doesn’t, is a chance you take.

Could you take it by a good mechanic to vet it for you?

Would not know on the price, that one seems fair, but used trucks can be a little overpriced now.
I may have missed, but the one clanter linked to is not 4x4?
For us 4x4 is imperative.

it is 4by4… Fx4 Off-Road Package ($905).

Also OP should look at the cost of money rate even if they have the cash to pay for the truck it may be worthwhile to finance. Here the “left over 2020” models have 1.9% financing available with specific versions at 0% (Eco Bust engine).
I recently bought my wife a new car, went in with the intent to pay for it full But… the specific car she wanted right down to having the options she desired had 0% financing so I just put the funds in a special investment account that I can drawl from each month to pay the monthly payment which are at zero percent … if wanted or needed I could just pay the thing off. Another point at least with our insurance carrier (USAA) there is a discount for New car purchase so the insurance was less.

our current F150 is a four wheel drive, we rarely need the use of But it sure is nice to have when needed… like making the dash run up into the great frozen north country near the Canadian border to pick up that special horse

I believe you were glad to have 4x4 there, that snow looks impressive to think of driving on it.

From the look of the asking price of similar trucks it’s a fair price at least. Of course, asking price and what was actually paid is unknown. I’m sure we’ll try to negotiate down a bit.

I am glad to hear you have a similar truck and are happy with its capabilities. I very much agree that 4x4 is a need for us out on our gravel roads. Our old truck wasn’t and we were always driving my husband’s jeep anytime it snowed (which we obviously can’t haul with!).

I had the husband’s father look at it who rebuilds cars for fun and was a mechanic back in the day. He didn’t know much about the electric (doesn’t have much good to say about the modern cars and all their gadgets anyway) but otherwise said it looked very clean and nice inside.

Supposedly it was owned by an old man who just didn’t use it much.

That is something we considered for the same reasons. And they’re giving a bunch of money off to get rid of the 2020s. But I honestly just hate the idea of paying $45-50,000 on a truck with 10 miles on it when I can spend $30,000 on one that still only has $22,000. I’m honestly just so stingy.

And you definitely would want 4x4 in that snow!

Sound like your find is just right for you.
The difference with a new one is, the warranty and that you don’t get that big initial loss of value from a new to used one.

Since you already had a mechanic look it over and not find anything wrong, that is a plus.

I like that mine fits in the garage, don’t have to put it in the barn during bad weather.
Not sure how much bigger the 2020 are.

2020 should be same size as the 2016 as the F150 was redesigned in 2015… I"think" 2021 is an update

That is good to know.
My friend that sells those thinks that, once the 5 year warranty expires, people that can should trade, no matter how many miles and definitely any time before the 90,000’s.
Seems that after that, depreciation takes a hit, trade value drops more than is worth keeping one “a bit longer”, unless that means many more years.

Regarding the cab (excellent comments on all the other stuff): why do you prefer the crew cab? Do you anticipate having many passengers?

I have a 2014 RAM 1500 extended cab and it fits my needs well. We have no kids, so the seats remain folded down for the dog to ride. In a pinch, I have taken a few barn buddies to lunch and the back seats were good enough for the trip into town. Groceries fit fine, a saddle in a box, other stuffs, etc. In short, I have never desired MORE cab room and enjoy the extra bed length.

the 5 year 60,000 mile part of the limited warranty covers the drive train… the 3 year 36,000 part is most everything. Depending upon when this 2016 was put in service, the base 3 year/36k part of the warranty most likely has expired due to time rather than mileage

Under your New Vehicle Limited Warranty, Basic Coverage begins at the original warranty start date and
lasts for 36 months or 60,000 kilometres (whichever occurs first). The complete vehicle is covered under this
Basic Coverage, except components listed under the following warranties in this Warranty Guide

Our last F15’s have been crew cab, but in reality, all that huge leg room behind the driver’s seat is a bit wasted for us, since it is a farm pickup and rarely has people in the back seats.
The reason is crew cab, is what sells here, you can’t find other unless you have them ship one in.

I think this is more realistic for us as well. I live the idea of the extra space in case we have other people. But it’s usually just my husband and I and the dogs. And it’s still more space than our last extended cab F-150 so I’m happy enough.
