Help Me Figure Out Tow Vehicles

People register trailers in Maine in a lot of states for reasons other than property taxes.

In MD, people do it to get around biannual registration and inspection fees. Also to get out of the taxes they will hit you with to get it titled.

No way would I haul live animals with that. Horses move, kick and can make a trailer move and make towing with a huge tow vehicle feel dicey under the right circumstances.

You want to load up and haul stuff for a yard sale or dump go for it.

Interesting. I wasn’t aware that MD required biannual inspections on trailers. Thought it was just prior to sale or transfer?

I just recently got rid of a 2012 Audi Q5. I never considered towing with it. I think the wheel base is just too short to be stable with a trailer behind it.

I still tow my 2 horse SL with DR Sundowner with a 2004 Chevy Tahoe with a heavy duty tow package.

Don’t know about Loudoun, but I registered my Bockmann in Montgomery County, MD and it was the same as any other trailer.

MD only requires inspection on used trailers. I think Texarkana meant initial inspection and then biannual registration fees.

No biannual inspection required but you do have to renew your tags every 2 years

How much does it cost to renew tags in MD?

I think it’s $160 for two years for my trailer

Just FYI, since I have Maine plates on my trailer, it’s $100 for 5 year Maine plates. A significant savings over plating it in MD.

When I was in VA I did have VA plates on the trailer because you could get permanent trailer plates. But then you also had the massive headache of an annual inspection on top of the property tax. I was so happy to move back out of VA. (ETA: it was an extra hassle for me not because the trailer was not being serviced annually, but because I boarded and kept the trailer in MD, so would have to haul it to VA just to get inspected. I eventually just…stopped bothering. No one ever noticed for 3 years.)

My most recent was $102 for 2 years.

This thread is making me feel very grateful that I live in MO. My lifetime trailer registration/plates only cost me $73! No inspection required either.

Yes, Yes, Yes…not worth the hassle and risk.
