Help me pick a stallion that meets this criteria...

Gatsby. He does everything you want - puts great Ammy temperament on, adds bone to lighter mare, is really good on TB mares, add some suspension if they are a little flatter in movement but doesn’t really change the mare’s movement (ie if she moves like a Hunter he’s not going to put knee action on). He’s got lots of kids out there doing Eventing and most of them move and jump well enough for Hunters, and of course they also do some Dressage, either as part of Eventing or as the separate discipline.[/QUOTE]

depending on the mare’s breeding, this may be an excellent suggestion. gatsby has some strong TBs in his pedigree, including bold ruler and hawaii – linebreeding to bold ruler usually gets you a very special type of TB - and they usually have good bone and minds.

Yep

If you go searching for offspring by him, you will find they are all “clones”. The phenotype produced is eerily similar. He for sure is very prepotent for a specific type, and it’s a good one.

Funny you guys bring up Gatsby - my other mare is by him, out of a TB mare. While she has a lovely temperament and is an ok mover, she has the most god awful topline and a long back. I’m guessing it came from the mare’s side - but the mare herself had a decent topline and wasn’t particularly long backed so I’m a bit put off from breeding to him (he is however a stunning animal himself). I bought her, didn’t breed her, for the record.

Really looking at Landkonig - really like him and think he’d cross well on my mare. There is a little known KWPN stallion at Cornell, Waterford, by Consul, that I am looking at too. He looks like a great cross on my mare and he is local. However his goals can only be registered awr so I’m not thrilled with that…

So hard to decide! Thank you for the suggestions, I haven’t looked at all the stallions suggested yet but I am working through them - some truly stunning sites.

That’s too bad you have that experience with Gatsby. I would be looking behind that mare, as she might be the one-off in her line, and her parents should not have been breeding in the first place

That said, no stallion can fix or improve every mare, especially if the mare’s pedigree produces all sorts of phenotypes.

Winterprinz might be a good cross, he has great character and crosses well with lighter horses. Dynamite conformation. Doesn’t have a great piaffe/passage but he’s very atheletic. Successful offspring in dressage, jumping. Waterford is nice but why is he only AWR? For $$, Contango is very versatile. If breeding one horse, I’d go for an older stallion with a record of what is produced with TBs and in general.

Thanks for continued suggestions!

Waterford was injured early in career and never presented to the KWPN stud book, so that’s why he is only eligible AWR.

I might have to make a decision based on which stallion owners will actually get back to me - many just ignore the emails and phone calls.

Boleem, as well. You can find information on him at www.selectbreeders.com Stallion Guide. Also a lot of other nice stallions are on their site with good information.

I really don’t have any stake in this stallion but I just can’t so good enough things about Gatsby and his people. Elisha is really awesome to work with.

I don’t pretend my just-turned 4yo is world class, but he is pretty nice, I think, and his movement is really good - well-suited for Hunters in good company, not an UL Dressage prospect by ANY means, but neither is his dam, but with very nice self-carriage all his life and nicely elastic, and bold and brave enough to go XC like many of his “half siblings” are doing.

I can pull a picture of his dam if you want to see a comparison in pretty much the same pose how Gatsby improved her - height, bone, better neck, shortened the back a bit, bigger engine.

But you might get something a lot shorter.

We’ve hit a homerun twice with Coromino o/o a Thoroughbred mare. Easy going, lovely gaits, light in the bridle and easy to train, jump very well and a great canter. He’s handsome, more modern type, also gives a walk with alot of swing.
The filly really wowed the GOV inspectors at her mare inspection, they wanted her to go for her u/s rating (MPT?).

I got VERY lucky breeding my mare to Apiro. Your mare sounds exactly like mine. I do dressage with my guy and he’s super rideable. He’s also starting to show in the hunter ring this year.
