I have t posts and some horse fencing but am wondering if it would be easier to get some electric netting for goats could also help to keep predators out (not a huge concern but we do have coyotes here). Also assuming this is for less than 100 ft of fencing, what power of solar charger would I need. Can I set up electric fence in a U Shape against an existing non electric fence? Thank you.
Also can anyone recommend brands of fencing and fence chargers?
I have had good luck with Zareba products. I have used their battery powered charger and their solar powered charger. The battery powered charger could work off D batteries or a marine battery.
A friend of mine would use cattle panels to contain here goats during the day. She had several areas in wooded areas that needed the understory removed. She would use the 20’ long cattle panel to contain them for the day. Their night quarters consisted of a stall that had a run made of no climb. I think she had that electrified along the inside somewhere.
Some pictures of my goat fencing… it is electrified Premier 1 and Powerfields netting, topped with 2 strands of tape to make it look “nice”.
Yes, you can set the netting up in a U-shape. It does not have to make a full circle to work effectively, just like all electric fences, it can “dead end”.
The netting does have a lot of “interference” due to all the intersections, so I have found it works best with a “larger than you would expect” charger. I have 30-mile chargers on 1 acre fields. Goats and predators also require a “knock you on your ass” zap in order to respect the fence, or they will push right thru it.
Honestly, for less than 100’ of fencing, it would be cheaper and easier to just use the 4x4 wire panels for horned goats, or regular cattle panels for dehorned goats. Then you can just use super cheap wire, charger and insulators to run a strand or 2 of hot wire to deter predators.
