Help me shop for an infrared heater for my new wash rack

Does anyone have any insight about buying the proper infrared heater(s) for a wash rack?

Wants/needs:

  • to dry wet or sweaty horses
  • might get splashed on occasion
  • NOT hung from the ceiling - I’m thinking two smaller ones, hung in the corners on each side???
  • adjustable output (Low/Med/High???)
  • turn on/off without unplugging every time

So many of the ones I’ve found, show them being hung from the ceiling, and my ceiling is only 11’. I don’t think that gives enough clearance.

Any help or comments would be appreciated!

I think 11’ overhead is enough clearance for a heater. I don’t think I would want much water splashing onto a plugged in heater. Have you googled “infrared heaters in horse barns”??

Look into the Orion equine lighting. They make infrared heaters for wash stalls. They do hang down but at 11’ with their design it looks like you have enough room. They are moisture proof and are designed to be used in wash racks with horses and hosed off to be cleaned when turned off. I am looking at using them personally in my new barn, along with their lights for the stalls. I know lots of people who have been happy with this company (note I have not used them personally yet).

Edited to say that they have a picture of them mounted on the side wall of the wash rack where the wall and the ceiling come together, so I guess they don’t have to be hanging. Who knew.

I will check them out! Thanks!

I have Kalglos and they are great. I have two in my wash rack and I have a 12ft ceiling, and I have one on a temperature control in my tack room for the hot water heater.

I am thinking of adding one in my wash rack, and had posted this link on another thread about heaters. My ceiling is 9’6" at shortest (wash rack floor is sloped) and I asked Barn Pros about the clearance necessary. They responded that the height of the wash rack in their loft style barns is 9’2" and they use the heaters in there, so I think at 11’, you would be safe. You really can’t hang them up too high as they’d be too far away to do anything - infrared heaters work by being aimed at what they are heating, if that makes sense. Not by heating a space.

I haven’t decided whether to add this one in mine yet. We don’t get that cold, and I don’t ride much in winter due to the rain, but it would be nice to have the option of heat.

Just wanted to post a great thing we found today at the Midwest Horse Fair. It will take 3+ gallons per minute sprayed directly on the element, and the rest of the unit is sealed.

I was most impressed at the salesman using a spray bottle directly on the glowing hot element, any other IR tube that I know of would have exploded.

This is also what I have in my wash stall. My ceiling is peaked and I’d guess the lowest point isn’t even 10’ and it’s not an issue hanging from the ceiling. It’s positioned over the horse’s backs, and like horsepoor said, if it’s too high it won’t be very warm. That being said, it’s an awesome heater and keeps the wash rack toasty warm!
