Help pricing a foal

I was hoping you all could help me price a foal. It is a weird situation and a complete accident and I am a little baffled. I wasn’t really intending to sell him until he was under saddle because I wasn’t sure how to price him. However, he turned out to be a cute little guy with nice movement and I have had a few people interested and asking me what I want for him. I don’t want to over price him, but I want to get what is fair.

Here are the details-
*I purchased a mare as a project. Nice but unbroke 5 year old branded/papered Hol. mare. She has fantastic movement out of a well known stallion. I bought her directly from the breeder/stallion owner. She free jumps beautifully and has multiple full siblings with impressive show records in the jumpers.

*A few days before the hauler was scheduled to arrive the seller told me she was in foal and was bred by his two year old colt who jumped the fence months back and would likely foal in 4 months.

*The two year old is her half brother by the same stallion. So the mare and the stallion share the same sire.

*The foal is now 4 months old and very correct and attractive. A spitting image of the mare (who very much favors her and the stallions sire). He moves very well and is put together nicely.

*He has been 100% healthy and free of any known issues (I was obviously expecting a 5 legged monster)

*The foal, at best, can get a COP with the hol.

What would you price this foal at? I think he is too nice to just give away. I envision as a newly started 3 year old that I would be able to sell for $10-15k if he has as great of a brain as his dam. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thank you

Who is the sire that they are line bred to?
Zang. is a registry that has used intense linebreeding with success. I guess it depends on the pedigree and if your marketing reaches those that are not sensetive to that cross. But jumper foals usually sell for less than dressage foals. I would try around the 8k here. Your area may have a different market.
Get the COP!

I do not think you’ll get 8k for a cop accidental breeding foal. I’d think maybe half that.

I really think it depends on the quality of the foal. Including pedigree. Cop doesn’t mean much for a gelding or a performance horse. I don’t know what area the OP is in but if you start low you are admitting a lack of quality. Selling is so much how you market, the appeal of the animal and the age. Yearlings are a hard sell and foals are easier. And how you write up the ad and how aggressive you are in getting to the right audience. Someone might offer 6 or 7 if you ask for 8k. This is a based on the foal being really nice and the sire of the parents being excellent.

Would be interesting to have a video and an idea of the pedigree. Foals can be priced on two things, the paper and the look (conformation, movement etc). Of course, it is hard to forsee the potential in the foal and those two items remain the best tool to try to guess.

Here is a link to his pedigree. I, in no way, want anyone to think anything poorly of the stallion owner. This truly was an accident and he was honest and upfront about his horses. I am located in the southeast. At this time I do not have a video of him since I never intended to market him for sale at this point.

This Pedigree is not accurate. Finest Silver is by Solid Silver / Calypso II / Aldato if my memory is correct and the bottom of the pedigree behind the Campione mare is not right either.

Also , I have a pet peeve here and if I may offer a correction ?.. Your horse is not “out” of the stallion. He is by the Stallion and out of the mare.

I don’t like All Breed Pedigree because it gets ‘‘hacked’’ too often.

Catiago’s pedigree
Campione’s pedigree
Calypso II’s pedigree
Prospectors Gamble’s pedigree
Le Val Blanc’s pedigree

Aldato’s pedigree - I don’t know where this one fit.

Despite that I couldn’t find Carlos M, Finest Silver, Solid Silver (96), Catarina or Imperial III, I find that Sport Horse Data to still be more reliable than All Breed Database.
