Help Reading Thoroughbred Tattoo Please

I recently started leasing this mare. She’s a bay, about 16 hands, and the owner thinks she’s around 11 (could be older or younger). She’s tattooed but it’s hard to read. I’ve never tried reading tattoos and I was looking for a bit of help? Thanks!

Any white on her legs? Need photos if she has any white other than on her face.

Often markings can help solve hard to read tattoos so it would be better to either describe her markings, preferably with a link to a picture to help whoever volunteers to help you narrow it down based on what is legible.

I put a body photo of her on my photo bucket. The only white on her is on her face. She has none on her legs

Maybe this one:

Star pointed to left at top of eye level. Double horizontal cowlick at top of eye level.

Raced only in Indiana.

Looking at the tattoo, that looks like it could be the numbers! Is there any way to verify this is actually her? How do I know for sure if that’s her? I’ve never worked with OTTBs so I don’t know anything really about researching tatttoos.

Does her star point to the left eye with a double horizontal cowlick just above? If so, that’s her andwhy describing exact markings is so important.

If you want to know for sure, send her DNA into the Jockey Club.

For horses born in 2001 or after that are not tattooed or for which tattoo research was unsuccessful, customers may submit a request to the Registry to DNA type the horse for comparison to the DNA types on file for registered Thoroughbreds. There is an $80 fee associated with a request to DNA type a horse. DNA typing is not available for unregistered horses. Click here to request assistance.

But that set of markings is pretty unique and if she’s got the double horizontal cowlick, very good chance that’s her.

I uploaded a photo of her forehead to my photo bucket linked in the first post. It appears to me that she only has one cowlick and that it it slightly off to her left side. Also, I talked to her owner today, and she’s owned this mare for nine years. So she’s at least 11.

Several suggestions since the numbers didn’t look at all to me like the ones listed above. It would help quite a bit to take the photos under black light in a darkish environment. It also helps to do each side more or less separately and each letter/number as a separate macro photo.

If I were you, I’d contact the TRPB, the folks who did the tattoo and keep all of the records of markings, including whorls. They do tattoo research from photographs, and if anyone can tell you who you have, they can–unless you want to have a DNA search through the JC. The TRB tattoo research is free, unless you want the horse’s race record which is available for $10.

You’d need to do a whole slew of photos, showing all whorls and markings, and the horse from all sides.

I will definitely try this! Thanks! I’ll have to go out and take more photos. Unfortunately I don’t have a black light. But I’ll try taking photos in a darker environment. I should or shouldn’t use a flashlight on them?

She doesn’t have any white hairs in her tail? There is another one named Go Rissa that could be close, but that mare has white hairs at root of tail.

I would expect a description would mention the star as being above eye level since it’s unusually placed. Irregular triangle star, pointed at top, mixed on edges. But everyone has a different idea on how to describe markings.

Try blotting her lip to take the shine off before you take photos.

One thing people often miss is white hairs behind the fetlock.

The two cowlicks at eye level down look vertical to me. Also, is there another one below the two? Some irregularity in the hair pattern that might be classified as a cowlick.
