HELP! Tall boots: too wide for average boots, not wide enough for "wide" brands

Hi all,
I’ve been searching for tall field/dress boots for hunter classes for over a year now and am at wits end. Would love any advice you can spare!

I am SHORT and WIDE with a small foot… but here’s the catch:
I’m TOO WIDE for most brands (and too short for their “short” size most of the time; they’re too tall!)
I’m NOT WIDE ENOUGH for the “wide” brands!

For example, Tredstep Donatellos… they do not make anything short or wide enough for me.
But the Tredstep Donatello Plus/Wide… well, the most narrow one is much too wide :frowning:

Same goes for Fuller Fillies. Their most narrow boot is much too wide for me, by at least a full inch.
I’m at this strange in-between area.

I’ve got short wide feet (I call them duck feet), and my properly fitted runners/sneakers are a Ladies 5.5, D-width in US sizes… roughly an EU 36 wide. I need something that can often accommodate a wider foot, or at least a wider toe.

so, foot size: EU 36, USA 6-.6.5 (since I need the width, i’ll deal with some extra toe if i must)
Calf height: 38cm; ~14.75’’
Calf width: 39cm (I was able to fit in to an Ariat 6.5 wide/regular that is 38cm width on the size chart. Sadly this doesn’t come short enough or in a small enough foot)
ankle: 23cm

What I’m currently wearing:
Ariat CHILDREN’s paddock boots, size US 3.5 (I get away with this because children’s sizes are unisex! They’re wider than a ladies equivalent!)
with ProChaps half chaps; shortest size (15’’ but still too tall, they only work because they bend around my knee. But this wrecks my pants and hurts the knees!)

I’m an adult amateur at best, located in Canada.
Willing to buy elsewhere and ship…
Would like to see if there are options besides coughing up $800+ on customs?
Has anyone had luck buying a cheaper brand and then adjusting them with a cobbler?

Thank you for reading

Check out the PEI ones (premier equine) they are leather but a stretchier leather
They are so comfortable. Im also a wide, and couldnt really get the zips on my wide ariats up, and if I did I got a numb calf muscle. I am in premiers now (they were less than 150$) and though im tall, my only complaint is they are a little shorter than I prefer.

You can get a gusset added to the back seam of tall boots that are too narrow in the calf but fit everywhere else. People used to get boots cut down for height but with all of these spanish tops I’m not sure how easy that would be. If you have a good cobbler in your area you might visit with them and see what modifications they could do to off the shelf boots. And make sure you’re taking the way a boot will drop into account when measuring for height. They are supposed to suck to break in, but you should still be able to bend your knee some.

There also used to be (and maybe still is?) a guy on ebay that did made to measure boots for a few hundred. Not every custom has to be Der Dau $$$$ money so you might get lucky on google.

A few thoughts.

  1. Field boots with an elastic gusset along the zipper can give you an extra 1/4-3/4" of width, depending on the brand and the width of the gusset. Often it is advised that people buy tighter in these boots as the elastic will stretch.

  2. Your saddlery or cobbler can stretch the calf of the boot about 1/2". I’ve had calf boots that could be stretched further than this.

So if you find boots that are only a little too slim for you and fit the calf, don’t despair- these are routine ways to get the boot to fit you!

  1. You can make up for 1/4-1/2" of height by stacking heel lifts in your boots. Boots with zippers tend to drop less than boots without- I get about a half inch of drop out of most zip boots- and if your boots are snug around the calf as yours will likely be, you may already know to expect only a little drop. Heel lifts can help to make a boot that’s a bit too tall more comfortable for you

Petrie’s standard size XW/Series 11 is 42 height /39 calf in a us 6.5- EU 37 (I would not size down smaller than this). They have several models under $500 if brought in from Europe.

I’m 5’ tall and I wear the KN series which is their short/standard calf…in that size it is 40 tall, 35 wide.

I have Ariat Heritage that have a small gusset and a small piece of elastic going up by the zipper. I was between an XW and a W. now after weight loss, I’m between a regular and W and the elastic keeps everything looking decent until I’m in a regular calf.

Check out Ovation Flex Sport children’s. I just looked because I have a 6.5 foot and the adult version were the only off the shelf boots to fit me. The children’s look like they might work, the calves are in the 14-16 range and heights are 15-17.

As someone else said, the calf should drop and you can do the “bathtub method” to stretch the calf a bit.
