On a whim a few months back I started spraying a bit of Canter Mane and Tail on my horse’s shoulders where the blankets would start to rub. I thought it might help the area to be a bit slicker, and maybe moisturized a bit. I do it a few times a week, and so far haven’t developed any rub marks, although he is clipped and blanketed at night.
I got my horse a Jammies shoulder guard. I put it on him the minute he starts to get rubs and it stays on most of the time he’s blanketed. It’s also a good extra layer on those really cold nights.

I second Bossy Bibs…have used them on several horses and Never have a blanket rub! They are awesome. I have used other brands but nothing as good as these and she will help with sizing.

Eh, the regular shoulderguards work just fine at a fraction of the cost. I’ve never had a problem with mine slipping and it works very effectively.
I’ve also tried using show sheen and it seems to work but I haven’t used it regularly enough to know for sure.
Regular lycra shoulder guards work just fine for some horses at a fraction of the cost. Even if mine were one of those I’d still prefer Bossy’s Bibs for how much easier they are to put on/take off and keep clean and nice.
I’m as frugal as they come, but find better economy in buying effective, long-lasting, well-designed products versus cheaper alternatives that may not work as well or last as long.
Nothing beats the elusive perfect blanket fit, though!
Not in my experience. They actually make it worse and the static was ridiculous. Nothing compares to Bossy Bibs. Obviously blanket fit is key but I ran into a situation last year that i needed to get something. Years ago I tried those cheap shoulder guards and it was horrible. I’ll never use anything other than Bossy Bib if the situation comes up again. Well worth the cost and no static!
So true.
I use these, not lycra. Never had a problem with static. My first one lasted about two years before my horse found it in front of his stall and decided to use it as a chew toy.

Anyways we are derailing the OP’s point, which is to try a show sheen type product and perhaps no shoulder guard or bossy big type thing is required at all.
That’s a Bossy’s Bibs knock off.
Alas, I haven’t had as much luck as OP with coat shine or conditioner products. I wonder if it’s more effective for horses who are blanketed for shorter durations than for those who get swaddled in heavy layers 24-7 through the winter…
Bossy Bibs.
I only have one horse who gets rubs - Mr. Big Shoulders-nd-Wide Chest, and used shoulder guards and Show Sheen until I found the Bossy Bib. I haven’t had any rubs for three years since using it - it has worked under every piece of clothing this critter has. It seems infinitely more comfortable for the horse too.
