Not sure this is the right forum- but I will be getting my 8 months old colt in December and am looking for a good place to raise him with other horses. Open to all places on the West Coast. Please let me know if you have suggestions or recommendations.
Thank you!
Since you have had no other responses, and I can’t give you a specific suggestion either, I will say, look around at breeding farms in the area that you live. If you have purchased a young colt, and (correctly) want him to grow up in the company of other young colts, in a well run facility, look for that sort of facility. TB breeding farms in your area may have a colt pasture, and may accept your colt as a boarder. If you are willing to geld early, then he could go out with fillies too, soon or in the coming year. It takes a herd to raise a foal. If you choose a TB breeder who will board your colt, those TB colts will be going for breaking in the fall, or to yearling sales, so your colt/gelding will have to be put with new friends at that point- which may work out fine too, if he’s a pleasant herd mate, he could be a good “uncle” to the breeding farm’s next crop of weanlings for another year. The other option is larger sport horse breeders in your area, who may take him on as a boarder. Keep him close to you, so that you can be there in person regularly, both to check on his situation, and do some handling with him, develop your relationship with him. If you have not handled young colts previously, you can learn a lot from the staff at a good breeding farm.
