I’m doubtful that this will happen, as this guy has the least legible tattoo of any I’ve seen. However, I’d love to try to get the history on this guy. I read in another post that some folks have had luck using a black light. Can anyone tell me if they’ve had success with that? If anyone thinks they might have luck despite the faded tattoo, I can try to get shots with a real camera and send them to you. This guy has clearly had a rough time recently and was just saved from slaughter and I’m fostering him. I’d love to know who he is! Thanks in advance!
People say the black light helps and also wetting the inner lip. Why not get some photos and post them here? I’m sure you’d get lots of help trying to decipher them.
I think you might need a premium members to post photos but maybe someone who has one can post them for you.
Good karma back to you for helping this horse!
Links to photos hosted on a site like Photobucket can always be posted by anyone.
^^^^ Oh, right, I forgot. That is a better idea!
If you can get some of the tattoo figured out, or a good guess at it, sometimes some of the people at The Jockey Club are helpful.
Post pics of the tattoo, try to get a few angles and wipe the slobber off the lip if he’ll cooperate. Also pics of the horse’s face and legs that clearly show any markings. I’m pretty good at this and so are some others here. (Also if you know what state/auction he was found at, that’s sometimes helpful in verifying identity, although they can also end up very far away from where they were last known to be.)
Thanks everyone! I’ll work on getting some decent pictures this weekend and see if I can get them posted. I did email a few to one of the members from this forum and she’s working on it :).
He was rescued at an auction in Southern CA, but I have no history on him at all. He has o white markings…solid dark bay approximately 20 to 22 years old.
Thanks for all of the suggestions!
Also, the only part of his tattoo thst is even partially legible is directly in the center and appears to be a 5 followed by a 1 or 7.

Yup, I have posted this several times. A “black light” bulb cost like $2-3. Take in a dark stall and it should “glow” just like the posters in my teenage bedroom.
First time I saw it done I was like “wow, really trippy dude”
Don’t know about others but the picture links for “premium members” aren’t too “premium” when I click on them. Basically the size of a “thumbnail”. Kind of worthless.
Am I doing something wrong? I only post/view from my PC.
FB is the easiest way to download and post pictures and provide a link. And it is free. Photobucket is OK but is REALLY slow at times.

Could be very tough if he has no markings, but put the pics up anyway, we can give it a shot. A photo of the front of his face showing his whorls would be useful then.
Slightly aside, but can you believe years ago (the 70s) The Jockey Club didn’t record markings! I know this as I"ve tried terribly hard to figure out who the amazing OTTB I had when I was a teenager was. He was missing the last number in his lip number, so all I had was a letter and three numbers. I had lots of people, vets, etc., look at his lip & they all said, “Hmm, he’s missing a number.” Some kind person at the JC helped me narrow it down to one we thought was the most likely. (She was the one who said they didn’t record markings back then.) I get the feeling that their best guess, though, was not him. If they had recorded markings back then, I might have found out who he was. Can a horse have wrecked bilateral knees with just 9 starts? (I guess, considering they used even more cortisone injections (and other things) back then, correct?)
(Yes, I realize the OP said her horse has no markings, . . . )
OP, please link pictures. There are some very talented people here who can help.
Hmmm - thought I remembered markings being recorded back then on papers I had/saw. Or maybe I just remember seeing them on coggins reports…?
Upon thinking about what you said, CV, I called The Jockey Club again to ask. This person said they started recording markings in the 50s. This makes more sense. She said, however they don’t keep the information around for that long, unless it was a famous horse. (Somehow, I still think this info is out there somewhere.)
She said to go ask the TRPB to see what they think. So, I just spoke with them. (They tried to help me in the past with this horse.) This woman had a brilliant idea. His number appeared to be W975. She was thinking of other numbers that could look like that and came up with N1975. She said she will go through the old archives for me.
Or do you all have any guesses on what else what appeared to be W975 could possibly be?
Does anyone know what year an “N” would be foaled from the time period of the 60s?
(Yes, a long time ago, I know. He was my first horse and just truly the most amazing creature.)

N would be '58, if I’m doing my math right
Thanks so much, Simkie.
I found a link as to letters given out in that time frame, actually. You are right.

Actually, I realized that he couldn’t be an N, as if I had him in 1974 and he was supposed to be about 9, an N would put him at age 15. or so. The vet said his teeth looked about 9 and he came with racing plates on so, not 15.
Could V1975 look like W975?
