Hi, what do you think this could bé? It s hard and not painfull, i thought hématoma. À vet had a look AT it and also Said it was hématoma…probably. thé problem IS that it IS not going down and it s been liké this for more than a week now. I thought an hématoma would go down in one week but maybe some could take a lot more?IMG-20230522-WA0016|375x500

A hematoma is at first filled with fluid blood. The blood coagulates and the clot orgainizes. It may take a month to slowly resorb. Human treatment would involve moist heat to increase blood circulation to the area and help speed up resorption, but for your horse this would be awkward. Just give nature a chance and be patient.
I have a horse here with a hematoma; the vet prescribed dmso with azium mixed into it for the 1st week. It shrank by more than half (to my surprise!). And now we wait for it to be reabsorbed, which my vet said can take up to a year.
A year!!?? Well Hope not but we will see. I put also dmso but no change AT the moment. It IS hard. How Big IS thé one of your horse?
If you want to know what it is, have your vet do a fine needle aspirate.
Hematomas can take a long time to resolve, and might never fully go away, as sometimes scar tissue forms.
But was it hard or squishy?
It’s hard now. Not really squishy as the skin was tight as a drum due to so much fluid.

This IS today i called thé vet because i m worried about it
Good luck! Please update us after your vet’s visit.
Vet came, ultrasound it, Saïd that Big hématoma, gave bute and a cream to apply. Thé only thing IS that it IS almost two weeks and it IS not going down AT all, could it take several months to go away? Vet did not want to drain it
When my horse had a huge hematoma near his stifle years ago, my vet also did not recommend draining it because 1) it was fly season and risk of infection would be high and 2) it would probably refill and ooze. We just let time do its work and I also massaged the area gently with some kind of heat-producing udder salve for cows I think it was. It worked.
How long did it take to go away ? It s been 15 days now and it IS not smaller, i would even Say a bit bigger

Vet said not to worry but it IS getting bad
The horse here (whose picture I posted) is 90% better, I’d say. It reabsorbed faster than I thought it would. As I said, my vet told me it can take as much as a year to fully reabsorb.
So this IS how it looks After a month, still swollen, vet IS coming on thursday, it s still hard and with a red knot in thé middle. Could it bé still infected?
