Has anybody else dealt with this? What are your experiences. Had to take my little guy treated for it yesterday morning at 3 am. It was horrible for both of us and Im so happy that he is back. Would like to know others expeirences with it etc.
I’ve dealt with it, with meds it generally clears in 24-36 hours and the dog is fine. Scary when it happens the first time tho!
Yep, see it all the time. Most cases resolve in 24-48 hours, some require IV fluids, metronidazole and other anti-diarrhea medications (IV, not oral). Usually it can be treated at home unless severe. Stinky and sad…but the vast majority get over it quickly unless there is an underlying cause. Good luck with your pup!
Came home a couple years ago to find my poor dog cringing behind the toilet and pools of blood everywhere… after a panicked trip to the emergency vet, she was diagnosed with HGE. Spent an expensive weekend in the ER, but the vet told me it was unlikely to reoccur… well, she’s had a couple bouts since then. None progressed to the point of the first episode, and we got her in to the vet quickly for fluids and meds, but now I can see the signs early enough and give her meds that my regular vet prescribed in advance.
She’s a dachshund, so she’s close to the ground, and is very good at stealth grabbing of food/icky things–she’s perfected the feint past the object whilst casually grabbing it as she turns her head, and one time I found an entire half a sandwich that she was carefully storing in the back of her mouth, knowing that if she started chewing it, I’d catch her. I have to watch her like a hawk at all times, but every now and then she manages to get something that seems to trigger it.
Both of her two worst episodes (the first and third) happened in July, almost exactly a year apart, as the vet noticed. She also tends to get the early symptoms after she goes to stay with my parents for a while if we go out of town–they’re not as diligent about keeping her away from their dog’s food, cat food, and garbage, and they constantly give her table scraps. She comes home a pound or two heavier every damn time… sigh.
Have had a couple episodes with our chi/JRT mix…I keep a couple bags of Ringer’s on-hand, so after the first time I was able to start him on fluids right away and the second time wasn’t as bad; also gave Diar-Sanyl paste which seemed to help, too.
Every morning he gets a tablespoon of organic yogurt, am hoping it helps keep his gut healthy…so far, so good :).
he is doing much better and actually came home that night. i panicked tho when it first happend and was a complete mess. i am really hoping it doesnt reoccur but atleast if it does i know that its not as fatal as i thot and i wont go into panic mode so soon. he didnt even need to recieve fluids i think because i took him in as soon as it started happening and he the shot he got was for nausea and diareah (cant remember the name off the top of my head).
i did read that it occurs more so in small dogs and he is a italian greyhound/jr mix who can be a little “delicate” at times.
