Hemp bedding?

Anyone tried it? Thoughts? Horses on rubber mats in stalls. TIA.

Used it when I was a working student in the Netherlands in 2004. I loved working with it- easy to pick, super absorbent, not dusty etc. I’d love to see it available in my area again!

I’ve used it. Amazing stuff! NO dust, and I found myself adding bedding every couple of weeks instead of every couple of days. You pay more per bag but you save in the long run because you use fewer bags. highly recommend

Thanks! I’m going to try it. How deep should I bed initially?

Haven’t seen this product offered. I do see the rice hull bedding and have used it. The horses love it - very comfortable, no dust. For that, the wrapper on the bale calls out something like 10 bags to start in a 12x12.

Do you have to compost it before spreading or can it be spread immediately after picking?

Where do you get it?

Old Dominion distributed to different local suppliers (they have a search on their site). You start with 4-5 bags I believe (I did 4) and then add as needed. Mine is out more than in (only in during rain) and we have added 1 bag in just over a month. My horse is a pee monster (she pees EVERY time she’s in there even if it’s only for a few minutes while I hook up the trailer) and stall walks so I pick with a fine tune fork. I think it is fluffy (not dusty), highly absorbent, doesn’t pack like pellets do, looks similar to shavings and just over all a nice bedding.

Our horses were on dirt under shavings, not mats, so we ended up bedding a little lightly. Probably 3 or so inches, and used about 5 bags per stall. I wasn’t the one who ordered it so not sure where it was bought from… As far as composting vs spreading immediately, we composted first but I don’t think you need to

What region is this popular in (US)? It sounds great! I would love to find a source near Georgia!

According to the Old Dominion website, you can get it in Atlanta: http://www.odhemp.com/where-to-buy/

The closest distributor to me is 2 hours away :frowning:
