Hemp Oil or CBD?

Has anyone tried hemp oil/pellets or CBD for their horses? I am considering trying it on one of my OTTBs for general wellness and anti-inflammatory purposes, along with hopefully alleviating some of his post-track life anxiety. Google provides lots of information for smaller animals, but only a few resources for equines. I realize that hemp oil and CBD are not equivalent but would like to hear from anyone who has tried it. Thanks!

Also interested in this… have recently tried hemp oil with my mare but she won’t eat it :frowning:

I’m hearing good things. The human dose is 10mg per 100 lbs.

A lot of horses don’t like “eating” meds. If using CBD exact any med that your horse won’t eat with its feed, use an oral dosing syringe.

I tried CBD oil on my horse with arthritis. I found it made him sleepy after breakfast so I stopped. I would like to try the CBD pellets though.

I use hemp oil and all three of mine will eat it in their food.

I also feed hemp hulls. https://elitethree.ca/products/e5-evolve-hemp-hulls I think it’s helpful.

I started feeding my anxious chronic colic (perhaps due to unknown pain source) horse the CBD pellets about 3 weeks ago. No episodes since then, but I don’t see any change in his overall anxiousness. That’s still normal. LOL

I use and am a distributor for Elite Three. Can’t say enough good things about it. All 3 of my horses love it and so does my dog.

I have struggled with weight and gastric health with one of my geldings for 3 years. This horse has had ulcers, hind gut acidosis and runny poop pretty much the whole time I’ve owned him. A few months on Elite Three hemp products have been life changing for him. I will probably never to back to traditional commercial horse feed.

Waste of money. Training will help with the anxiety.

I have to differ from the above opinion. I have a gelding who is very spooky and reactive, and prone to ulcers. I had tried every supplement known to man with him, had an eventer ride him for an hour on trail once a week for a year, had a natural horseman work with him for 5 months on desensitization, and nothing helped. About 2 months ago, I started him on CBD pellets once a day and there has been such a huge change that even my husband noticed. He is now more mellow, seems to focus on his work better, and generally seems happier. He isn’t sleepy, nor blunted. He just seems mellower. He’s had a few minor spooks while on the CBD, but nothing like the craziness he manifest in earlier years.

What product are you using? I think the idea is interesting but have trouble sorting out good brands.

I used the Sat-A-Vet CBD on my generally pissy, reluctant to work at home, herdbound mare and saw no change in her attitude. I did 90 days so I feel like it was a good long test.

Where do you get your CBD pellets and how much do you feed?

knic13 and dps I use the Relax pellets from Centaur Health, and feed 1 tsp a day for a horse of about 950 lbs.

Does anyone know how CBD/Hemp is viewed by USEF and/or FEI (in terms of legality in show horses)? Have there been any studies released regarding the effects of CBD/Hemp in horses?

Also wondering about testability

Well, no surprise. A lot of people currently are using hemp oil and even during smoking a vape. It is easy to get one http://www.payspi.org and use it instead of regular smoking for example. But itself, hemp oil is extremely healthy.

I sell CBD pellets for horses. It has made a huge difference in my horse’s rideability while off property.

He’s always been a tough horse but after moving him home I started having a really hard time trailering out for lessons. He was so distracted by the other horses coming and especially going. Lots of outburst and tantrums. And he gets worse if he’s too tired so lunging him before doesn’t work.

CBD made all the difference. He’s totally focused in on my and no longer bothered by what the other horses are doing. I thought maybe he was just finally growing up and one day went to a lesson without using CBD and it was back to his old naughty self. It definitely works for us. And he eats the pellets right out of my hand.

Its really important to find the right dose for your horse. Too little and you won’t see an effect but too much can also be bad as CBD is actually a stimulant. Each horse is different so you just have to play around with the dose.

I’m interested if anybody is feeding hemp pellets for arthritis in older horse to control pain and inflammation? I’m not sure what the difference is between hemp pellets and CBD oil. If anybody knows please share. Thank you

Can someone actually tell me what hemp oil does? Please don’t be general. HOW does it “help” or “control” inflammation, and how has that helped your horse? HOW does it “balance” a horse or other pet? I have heard a thousand generalizations but nothing but anecdotal evidence that “it works”. I wonder how much owner placebo effect has to do with the popularity.

Please prove me wrong!

Also, those who are giving it to your horses, how much do you pay per horse per month?

Thanks!
