Hemp Oil or CBD?

The fact that merchants flog some product or other and make ridiculous claims for it does not necessarily mean that the product has no effects at all, or is not efficacious for some conditions. vitamin C is a good example.

There are many solutions, some of which are free or pretty cheap, to all of the above. Why you would use a little understood and untested product and expensive to boot is beyond me.

I don’t use it, I never suggested you or anyone should use it. I know quite a few people now who have gotten at least some relief with CBD from things like fibromyalgia, some AI issues, some major insomnia, anxiety, and a handful of other things, several of which have a known inflammatory component. I doubt all of those are a placebo effect. So clearly it does something for some people and for many, it’s a last resort.

You couldn’t believe there is invisible inflammation in the body. There is - long-studied, and becoming more well-studied in horses. Now you know. It doesn’t bother me at all if you think it’s worthless

There are plenty of tried and true remedies to inflammation without having jump on an expensive snake oil bandwagon. The product has not been studies wrt side effects, long term effects, etc. But go ahead and give it to yourself, your pets, etc. Nor are any of the providers regulated to make sure the product is pure, has no harmful ingredients, etc. The placebo effect is well documented, as is Darwinism.

This is an interesting thread and I appreciate everyone’s opinions. I agree to not believe anything from a website marketing and/or selling these products. But, there are a ton of credible sources on the internet and I encourage everyone to educate themselves on the science.

The patent office has been issuing cannabis patents since 1942, the US government holds a patent on cannabis for medical use, and there are literally thousands of other published patents and applications. These files contain a wealth of scientifically validated research. In addition, there are thousands of scientifically peer-accepted published research articles and clinical trials, including those published on US gov’t Nat’l Institute of Health site, with that number growing exponentially. There’s even a few fda approved drugs, with many more applications being filed now that hemp has been legalized federally.

It’s like climate change. There are those that do not fully believe the predictions of our current trajectory, but the science is there.

I do believe there’s something to be said for several thousand years’ worth of anecdotal evidence.

Training does not help anxiety, physical exercise does not help a mental problem. That’s like saying my Autistic son needs more time at the gym?

Actually, exercise can help with some mental issues.

Key words - can, some.

There are hormones which release during exercise. Cortisol levels can decrease. It helps hormone levels in the whole body which impacts brain health.

Exercise isn’t a cure for Autism, or schizophrenia or bi-polar. But the autistic/schizo/bipolar person who exercises will have better mental health than the one who doesn’t, that’s just the physiology of it all.

More than a few people have gotten off anti-depressants once they get into a regular exercise routine. Others have decreased dosage or frequency. Others still have to take them but feel even better. Exercise can help lower the sympathetic nervous system responses, increase serotonin production, release endorphins, and more.

Yes, some horses will have better mental health with a job. But just like people, mental health is very complicated, and there is no one-size fits all.

I would not equate training with going to the gym wrt horsemanship. Not at all. Bad analogy.

It is not really altering in the way you are thinking that it make you different in some way like being high. CBD is known to reduce anxiety. By reducing anxiety and or pain, cortisone (stress) levels lower and people feel better. That is the simplest way to put it.

I have used both CBD and THC for years myself, and for different things. There is a clear difference between the two, and personally I have felt effects of both, always positive mind you. I don’t have to rely on research because I have tried and tested myself, it works for me. Keep in mind not everyone needs CBD/THC due to their receptors. That’s why some people try smoking pot and never do it again and others use it help them function and live their daily lives.

I just purchased elite three. He is ulcer prone but I also battle obesity. Will this oil have any effect on arthritis. I had wanted to try CBD pellets but can’t get them in Canada.

Interesting. I cant speak to use in horses, but I just started my dog on CBD oil. She has chronic pain (back issues and IMPA) that is difficult to control. In my state a vet cant prescribe CBD although it is legal to use. However, a vet did casually mention a study at Cornell that showed good pain relief for osteoarthritis in dogs with no adverse effects.

Too early to tell yet

@Fharoah it should help. I can’t promise amazing results because I don’t know the severity of the arthritis. I have human customers that use it for their arthritis and can feel an improvement.

I just sat in on a medical marijuana seminar today from a pharmacist. To each his/her own definitely and I am okay being the outlier
but it honestly shocks me and scares me how quickly CBD came on as the cure to everything, and how readily everyone accepts that. It surprises me especially on this board where I see so many other threads about the importance of clinical efficacy and FDA approval for products. Until CBD has the research to support its use, and until it is FDA regulated and approved, you will not catch me using it for myself or my horses. There is no guarantee in terms of dosing or ingredients in any of the products people are currently buying. No thank you.

Since the stuff is still regarded as a Class I drug by the feds, research and FDA approval is difficult, at best.
But there’s some decent evidence to support efficacy for some of the proposed uses.

It does not, however, cure everything from cancer to warts.

I am also wondering about SeaBuck 7 by three elite would that have any beneficial anti inflammatory effect?

A search engine, using something like “sea buckthorn horse pubmed” is a great tool to find out lots of cool things, such as
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22845737

Actually, Warwick Schiller’s “relationship path” does exactly that. It is designed to increase connection and decrease anxiety. It is not straight obedience training, like traditional natural horsemanship programs. It teaches the horse how to truly focus on his handler, let go of anxiety, and relax. It takes a lot of patience on the human’s part as it involves waiting for the horse to let down.

Warwick now has had a multitude of horses at clinics who arrive either extremely anxious or totally shut down, and end up becoming relaxed enough to lay down and nap during the clinic. I am very slowly (I hate the winter!) working through the program with my ulcer prone, highly anxious OTTB and it is helping quite a lot.

There is no such species as “CBD flowers”.
CBD is one of the myriad of compounds found in Cannabis spp.
