Hennig Monoflap

I’m currently looking for a new saddle for my Warmblood boy. He’s not a hard horse to fit, but I do like my saddles with a deep seat and big knee blocks. The plan was to save for something else but he’s really starting to show signs that things aren’t quite right. The plan was the save for a County Ephinany or a Custom but I don’t think I’m going to have the luxury for much longer. I can switch him back to my husbands old Isabel which is flat as a pancake and a size too small for me. But he’s much happier moving in it. It kills my hips and butt to ride in it though. My boy has a good buck in him too so I like to feel a lot more secure than I do in the Isabel!

Today I stumbled across a Hennig monoflap, in my size and the correct gullet for him. I’ve never sat in one before and this saddle does come with a trial. It’s also a really good price that won’t take too much of a chunk out of the savings.

Has anyone had experience with the Hennig before? Good or bad?

Yes, I’ve had good experiences. If the price is right and there is a trial, definitely give it a try. Hennig saddles have great longevity IME.

I have had very good experiences with them…I have a long femur and as long as it was an 18 the thigh blocks work well for me.

Remember that Hennig are mostly custom made - it was built for someone else’s butt and tights.

So the angle of the blocks and the length/positioning might not be right for you. Each saddle can be very different.

I had one made for me and still, it fits me like a glove, it took me some time to get adjusted to the difference - it literally changed my posting, to the best, and I had sore abs for a few weeks afterward.

I love love love my Hennig Classic - I bought it second hand, so it was made for someone else originally, but that thing fits me like a glove and despite its fairly simple configuration, it is both comfortable and super secure. They are well made saddles and worth trying for sure!

I have ended up with 2 Hennig monoflap saddles (for my 2 mares). I bought both used, so they were not custom made for me. However, I managed to find 2 that fit me and my very differently shaped horses. It is a personal fit—my trainer has a different style Hennig (with an external flap)—but I have sat in it and it isn’t as comfortable as mine. Both of my saddles are 2008 models—I think they are the “sofa” style and one is in better shape than the other. The more “used” one has had the billets replaced and I had a tack shop recover the thigh blocks (leather had formed a hole in one)—they did a lovely job and it looks great. Most have an adjustable tree (if you have a saddle fitter that has a tree press) which is a bonus. I do think they are lovely saddles if you can find one that fits you and your horse.
