Has anyone used Herbs for Horses, specifically Mobility and Hyalcare? Did you notice a difference? My horse has arthritis in one hock and I currently use Cosequin MSM - I’m wondering if Herbs for Horses might be a better way to go to get some HA for a fairly reasonable price.
Just wish to point out that hyaluronic acid is not in any way, shape or form derived from “herbs”. It’s made from chicken heads.
hahaha I would certainly hope it’s more than herbs for the cost! Herbs for Horses is the company that makes the supplements.
I use them and now all my clients do too! We did our own “study” and tried 4 different brands for a month with an arthritic horse and Hylacare was the best. I believe it’s hands down the very best joint product on the market, and the mobility is amazing too. It works so well that my super arthritic dad began taking both of them and now he can actually move around. He went from having trouble walking for more than about 15 min on level ground to hiking up a mountain for 3+ hours. I love that its natural and has university research backing it up. I’ve now used quite a few of their products and found that every single one was as advertised. I’d HIGHLY recommend mobility and hylacare to anyone with an arthritic horse or one with joint pain.
University research? You mean they provide links to studies done on some of the ingredients that happen to be in their products, right? Not that these products individually have been studied rigorously in any way, shape, or form.
Anybody got a link to these products?
Re: hyalauronic acid
I mix up my own with HA powder and distilled water. Very easy and very economical. I buy the powder here:

The directions are here (click on “recipes” link on the right side of the page) - I used to buy the powder here until I found the less-expensive source I posted above:

Re: herbal supplement for joints. I use “Mov-Ease”, also from the company where I get the HA powder:

This is their website - you can find the ingredient list in their catalogue:
Darqhorse, I’m so glad to hear that you’ve seen good results. How much do you find it costs per month?
Liberty, I never thought of making my own. Very interesting! Thanks for the links.
Inne, my guys are all on custom blends which include several products. For me its the cheapest and best route to go (my blends save me about $100/horse/month). I can tell you way more about the products if you PM me with questions. I’ve spoken with Ralph the owner on many occasions and he is very knowlegable, nice and helpful. He works at the University of Guelph and does all of the research there so he is well reputed and respected. I think the Hylacare (joint) supplement runs around $90 and lasts for about 2.5 months for a normal dose and the mobility is around $65 and is I think 4-6 weeks or so??
Bumping this up: any new reviews? I am looking into putting my 9 year old pleasure horse on these products to help with some mild stiffness in her hocks.
I use the soluflex-HA for my horse, as well as the hoofmaster. Both are preventative as he is a big lazy 17.2+ hunter. I was using Recovery Extra Strength before, and this is way better bang for your buck as far as $/mg HA goes. The owner, Ralph (if I recall correctly) is also very knowledgeable and great to talk to if you have any questions!
This company popped up on the Favorite Smaller Brands thread as well. I looked at their website, and there does not seem to be a guaranteed analysis on any of the products? They don’t appear in the Feed XL database either…?
Trying to balance what I’m feeding, and love the positive reviews from COTHers, but don’t understand why few herbal supplements post a guaranteed analysis?
I use their Hoofmaster, the Ulcer Mix, and the Fiesty Mare. Very happy with all the products, and they are great for answering questions about the products, in a timely manner. Speedy delivery, and they have a loyalty program, as well.

I thought the Feed XL data base was for American products and doesn’t include Canadian products (such as the brand Herbs for Horses)?
I have used herbs for horses probiotic and their stomach ulcer medication. My horse was not scoped, and I was trying it out to see if it made difference in her girthiness.
The probiotics absolutely worked every time, a ten-day course fixed feed-change related diarrhea. The ulcer medication did seem to reduce maresy’s girthiness, plus she loved the liquoricey flavor, and would lap it up out of a bowl, so no need to mess with a syringe.
I like the company and the products, and I am generally leery of unsubstantiated claims for herbal products. They are Canadian, so would not be in an American database.
Hi Pippigirl, I use the Herbs for Horses Hoofmaster product and have used other various products off and on for years. I very much like and trust their products.
Their supplements are manufactured under GMP (http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/dhp-mps/compli-conform/gmp-bpf/index-eng.php) guidelines and the company is ISO certified.

Feed XL is actually New Zealand-based They will add in anything you ask - I was one of the beta testers. I’m in Ontario, and I sent them tons of feed data to enter in (brands that we carry up here but not in the US/overseas).
Their customer service was fantastic when I dealt with them, and that was way back at the beginning. I’m sure they’re still good now. It’s worth a try to see if you can get the H4H supplements added.
I also recommend them. They make a custom tri-amino mix for me (difficult to get Uckele’s Tri Amino up here) that’s actually more cost-effective than the “brand name”. I just started my horse on their Vitamin E too, as it was one of the few natural sources I could source locally (more bioavailable).
I used Mobility on my retired horse and the vet and I were both happy with it as a supplement. I recall it’s mostly devil’s claw and yucca. These days I’d be more likely to mix up the raw materials myself. Geez some supplements are obscenely expensive considering what’s in them. That’s a whole different kettle of fish though, I guess.

I use this too. Great stuff—keeps my 31 yr. old rideable. Inexpensive too.

The one thing I didn’t like about the Mov-Ease was that they refuse to list what’s in that supplement. There are a couple of other herbs that I was feeding and didn’t want to duplicate them.
