Here from the EHV article Archy

Echoing what you said earlier in your post, I remember either having access to the stall assignments, or being told exactly where the “Thermal” barn was stabled. It was a few rows away from us, but I did walk over that way to visit my dog friend Stella.

To the part I quoted, I want to say that it’s pretty easy to tell when my horse is running a fever as he stops eating and is lethargic. Not that every horse is the same, but between the groom, trainer, and owner/rider, someone would have noticed the horse wasn’t up to showing that day.*

*not saying I condone the trainer’s actions in bringing the horse straight from DIHP!

Is everyone missing the point that this post was made about Archie Cox? Not about the author or the details of the story. The original poster even stated what her post said before she edited it. If you want to start a post about the inaccuracies of this article or how the author did not do a great job of writing it start your own post.

Appreciate you backing me up. I felt it was common / confirmed knowledge at the time that the HDHP horse who was put down was stabled across from or very near a Thermal group - I vaguely recall double-checking the stall assignments myself, actually.

I actually think you may be missing my point. The “inaccuracies” of the essay are only there to protect the identity of the trainers who came from Thermal. Isn’t it worthwhile to ask why COTH would do that? (Who owns COTH? What else do they own? This isn’t a conspiracy theory, and it also isn’t rocket science.)

I am not trying at all to minimize the author’s traumatic loss of her horse, or condone the THREE barns who came from Thermal to LAEC. I’ve had plenty of lovely interactions with Archie. I also think ignoring a recommended isolation period to bring horses to a show is unacceptable, unethical behavior from a professional, judge or official.

You’re welcome to check my post history which confirms that I contacted USEF about this during the outbreak two years ago, including my response from them. My horses were in acute danger of infection during this EHV outbreak, I can assure you I took it seriously. You mentioned you’re also down the road from Archie, so we’re neighbors - feel free to PM me, happy to tell you who I am.

ESPECIALLY from a professional, judge or official who, frankly, are expected to know better and to lead by (proper) example.

Bad decisions made here.

@riot How were we to know exactly when the OP was deleted?

You can start a thread here but you can’t control where it leads.

You must be new.

Ya know…this whole effin’ thing!!! WHY did the Chron choose to run this now, two years after the fact and get everyone all upset again???

Well, obviously. Printing his name would be slanderous because–as the article states–it would be impossible to trace this infection spreading by one horse.

But WE ALL KNOW why the horses at LAEC got infected. Blame show management for allowing DIHP horses to enter? The same thing went on in Nor Cal, where Sami Milo brought an exposed horse in and (different) management allowed it. Then, her horse turned out to be positive for an active EHV infection. She wasn’t asked to leave until it showed positive.

Cassie Belmont brought horses direct from DIHP to Nor Cal Shows, Chad Mahaffey brought horses from DIHP to LAEC. It was easy to cross reference who had been at DIHP, and then went to the other California, or maybe even Arizona Winter Circuit shows.

Obviously the trainers are bad sportsman, don’t care about their fellow competitors nor other horses welfare and are very despicable. Where was show management, why weren’t they cross referencing? AND WHY HASN’T THE USEF DONE SOMETING ABOUT IT?

It’s so upsetting. I am so sorry for the loss of Nero, and ALL the horses who died or were infected . It wasn’t just one horse who got infected or died after LAEC shows. Too bad the epidemiology isn’t good enough to be traceable. This industry is soooooo screwed. And folks bash the racing industry. If they only knew …

Thank you for naming names. Needs to be done. As far as the article being two years later after the CA incident, I’m from another state was made more aware of the risks by the article. I’m going to be careful where I go.

Anyone can just search “EHV” on Facebook and find other instances of outbreaks. It’s everywhere, and this was not just one instance. We always have to be careful of exposure to many things with our horses when they leave home, or others come and go.

And though this was not an isolated incident, it’s the deplorable actions and poor decision making of these professionals that cost at least Nero his life, and sickened other horses. That is the problem in my opinion, and the lack of punishment for violation of protocol from USEF.

My vet recommended checking the Equine Disease Communication Center website regularly for
current and accurate outbreak alerts around the country. It’s a service of the AAEP.
https://www.equinediseasecc.org/
On the home page, click Alerts, and on that page, choose a state.

Yeahhhh… not how COTH works. Controlling the flow of conversation between horse people is like herding cats while blindfolded.

I’ll just leave this here. Is there some internet rule that any discussion will inevitably lead to the posting of a cat video?

Not a rule; it’s the law!

I believe it’s actually that every Internet discussion eventually leads to someone being called Hitler? Or something like that.
