Herm Sprenger Novocontact bits?

My trainer just showed these to me:
http://pferdesport.sprenger.de/qualitat-marken/sprenger-marken/novocontact.html?___store=reitsport_english

because the single-jointed ones sound perfect for my uber light and sensitive horse.

Has anyone seen or tried these? They’re still very new, they were only released last month. I ended up ordering one to try, so we’ll see!

I kind of question how horses in real life are going to react. It almost seems that these bits would teach a horse to not take good contact, but stay just a litte backed off.

Well, I’ve only had 2 rides in the new bit, but I already see a positive change, as does my trainer. My horse has always been super super soft in the bridle, and would quickly go BTV if you aren’t careful. Having him put weight in the contact has always been something to be careful with, it takes some careful riding to encourage him to go truly into the contact. And the one thing I can say for myself is that my arms and hands are soft and consistent, this is purely his own preference, not a rider-induced issue.

In this bit, he happily puts even weight in the contact right from the start. For example, suppling the rein no longer results in him going BTV, but instead loosening up through the base of his neck. Even better, my trainer and I have both noticed that he no longer sticks his tongue out (so far), which has been a slight problem all of his life, and more of a problem since he had a broken tooth, and then broken jaw, last year.

So basically he’s now much happier. Hopefully this continues!

Tried this bit tonight (loose ring) , and what a difference. He accepted the contact immediately and stayed on the contact. I like that is oval with the broad flat side resting on the tongue, but still a narrow height for his low palate. I also felt more connection. Will update with further rides. Had been working in a French link HS, but contact and connection were inconsistent.

I saw them, too, and wondered how they would work, and what type of horse would benefit from it (as in, inconsistent contact, grabbing the bit, or other issues). With the double jointed bits, how are they different from the KK Ultra?

They are more refined.

keyfins, I believe (from looking at the photos of the double jointed ones, and looking at my own single jointed one) the bit changes from a round shape to more oval towards the middle, to create a greater surface area that rests against the tongue, and therefore it distributes the pressure of the contact across a greater surface area. It does so without taking up more space in the mouth overall because of the new shape.

I’ve been using this bit for 2 weeks and still see a much happier horse, and I’m still beyond thrilled that his tongue issue has resolved (so far - I’m cautious).

We got one (the single jointed) when we were in Germany a few weeks ago. Our five year old stallion is very sensitive and often does not want to really take the contact. The change with this bit is very obvious, I definitely recommend it!

Thanks for all the comments. I might have to see if I can try one. Dressage Extensions has the bit rental program, and I’m sure there must be others.

I am not sure that they rent this one. However, second ride this morning was just as good as the first with the added bonus that I realized that all the rooting was absent.

GrayCatFarm, that sounds promising! Now, how can I get my paws on one?

DrExt DOES have them to try! yay!

Boooo. The double jointed Novocontact snaffle is back ordered.

I’ll spoil it-- all the rental novocontacts are backordered.

I wanted to do that too but I think I’m going to have to order one, and of course they’re out of stock everywhere so I’ll have to wait for that, too.

Farm House has them.
It’s good to read the positive reviews. I haven’t tried one yet, but the concept is certainly promising. My TB is sensitive/fussy with contact, so he’ll be a good tester.

VTO Saddlery has them as well.

Take minute a look at the Neue Schule video clip showing the Demi Anky snaffle which I what I’m using.

Isn’t it a similar concept? My horse likes it much better than the double jointed bits that I’ve been using exclusively for a couple decades.

Not in stock. All say “available for order” on them at VTO.

I’ll call farmhouse, as I need one sooner rather than later, my horse chewed through his nathe this week and my kk is too fat for his mouth.

When I last spoke to Annette Gavin about the demi anky, I was told it was discontinued and the only size she had available was a 5 1/2 which is too large for my large pony.

Equestrian collections has a lot of NS bits, and even if special ordered I had mine in less than 2 weeks.

14 business days on the demi-anky.

So, when I called back with the correct visa number (so much for ordering from iPad in bed), she told me it was back ordered. And it arrived 4 days later! I am using the single joint snaffle.
