Hermes Saddle-for cheap!

I was just looking at a thread about the ridiculous price of Hermes items, and as I was scrolling around on Ebay I found http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hermes-Steinkraus-Saddle-/231100737901?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35cead696dthis little gem!

It is a 17" Hermes Steinkraus saddle, a 17", for a starting bid of $500. It looks like a pretty good saddle; I am actually searching for a decent used 17" but I don’t particularly care for Hermes items. They’re not my cup of tea. The saddle wouldn’t fit me anyway. If anyone is looking for a saddle here ya go!

Too big for me, and if I recall the serial number on my saddle that one is really old.

What odd pictures. Is it just because I’m on mobile that I can’t see anything?

Veteran Ebayer here…waaay too many sellers on Ebay are clueless as to how to take good pictures, especially of used tack. A picture is worth a thousand words, as they say, and too many don’t tell much about what they are selling because of it. Some don’t have that much to say about what they are selling to begin with, or even know what to say even if they are the original owners. Good deals can be gotten that way, sometimes.

My #1 rule when photographing saddles: do it under natural light, outside, during the day. It shows the saddle best that way and also serves to not hide any flaws you will want to tell about, because buyers need to know what they are getting.

Why do I get the feeling you’re the seller?

The $500 is on the high end of what those old pancake Hermes go for…$300 is more about right, but I’ll give you the $500 since it’s a popular size and in decent shape.

The $1200 is laughably ridiculous.

Actually, GoforaGallop, you are wrong. Those old Hermes go for over a thosand all the time. Occassionally one will go cheaper. The one the OP posted has a very low serial number, so it ought to be one the low side.

Oh yeah? I’m looking at the completed listings on ebay and not seeing a single one that went for over about $600, with most going for less, if they had any bids at all.

I personally own two of the buggers because I happen to like the pancake-flat style of saddle, and didn’t pay over $300 for either of them.

Veteran eBay saddle expert here, paid for my horses (expensive!) board all through highschool and college by flipping saddles. $1200 is wishful thinking for the saddle in the OP.

Doesn’t mean that they’re not good saddles, but they’re not in style and they really don’t go for over $600. At a private consignment place, perhaps, if they sit around long enough, but not on eBay.

I wish someone had told all the people bidding against me three years ago. I did finally get one for a little over 500, but I had to work at it.

Nope, I am not the seller! I was just browsing Ebay and I came across this one; I wanted to share it in case anyone was looking for a saddle.

Thanks for all the info however!! I’m a bit new to the whole saddle-shopping experience so it is interesting to hear the things about the serial numbers and such! I didn’t realize that it was an older saddle, thank you for letting me know!
