Hermes Saddles

Friend of mine is cleaning up her tack room and has 2 circa 1980’s Hermes saddles. Still in good shape except the seats need replaced. Is there any value in these saddles? If so, what would be the best way to market saddles.

Ebay would be my suggestion.

I bought an old Hermes Steinkraus (at least 20 years, I’d say) for $1200 from Trumbull Mountain. I’ve seen similar saddles listed for similar prices depending on condition. Mine was in good condition but not without wear and some superficial cracking on one flap.

Hope that helps!

Try eBay, although if they are the flat, no-padded flaps Hermes saddles, the going prices that I have seen are around $450-650 for older ones in good shape, and $750-1,250 for excellent condition newer ones. I sold a mid-90’s flat Hermes Steinkraus in barely-used condition for $1,250 early this year (private sale), and have a padded flap Steinkraus that was barely used one for sale now for $1,500. And remember that it costs about $400 to get a seat replaced on a saddle, so figure that into your pricing…

Replacing the seat can be very expensive, Beval charges $935 and up. Personally, I wouldn’t want to buy a saddle that required such an expensive repair.

Sold my 1976 flat as a pancake Steinkraus on eBay last year and got almost $800 for it. I was tickled pink!

What did you end up doing with these? I just got one and am in love, so I’m very curious about people’s repair experiences since I can already tell I’m going to be very very upset if anything happens to it.

I would think someone would be better off finding a western saddle maker/leather worker to replace a seat vs Beval etc.

I remember the stitching on my Voltaire coming undone and being quoted 500+ and 4-6 weeks turnover time
