Thank You
What is trainer’s reasoning for upgrading your girth? Functional reasons, or is it brand related?
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to purchase brand name items simply for the enjoyment of owning something “fancier”, but if your current girth fits well and works for you, don’t feel pressured to purchase something else just because trainer says something more expensive is better.
I look for something that fits the horse, is made well and is easy enough to clean. I was always one to buy leather but recently picked up a memory foam contoured girth that is fabric covered and it has been great. Not as easy for cleaning as leather might be, but it was very budget-friendly. I always shop the local used tack store before buying new, and/or FB horse sales groups.
I personally avoid neoprene just for the tendency to rub - but a fleece cover works just as well generally.
What problems do you need your girth to solve?
My mare needs a shaped girth to keep the saddle from slipping forward. She does better in leather than neoprene. Fuzzy girth covers are OK unless they impinge on her elbows in which case she is unhappy. I am still thinking about getting a custom made mohair girth for the dressage saddle after she got some rubs from the girth on a long trail ride last fall.
But all this is particular to her. What job does your girth need to do?
Actually this is a good point, and also probably why my trainer said to wait a few months.
Well it needs to be budget friendly within reason and comfortable for my horse. My girl, a sensitive chestnut OTTB, has a fabric one with comfy fuzzy lining and I think she is happy with it. Any upgrade would be more for being decorative (leather which I love) vs functional which her current girth already is. Honestly unless you are up close are you really going to notice it? I have to economize to afford horses so I generally opt for cheaper which can include good quality used tack.
