Hi, I am looking for recommendations on a high fat horse feed that is not a sweet feed. I am currently feeding eqceed 12-12-12 and would like to find a pelleted feed that compares to it. Thanks in advance
The only one’s I’m familiar with that are pelleted are Purina Ultium and Triple Crown Perform Gold.
I’m sure there are others, so I’ll be watching with interest.
Purina Impact “all stages” is 14% fat and pelleted or textured ( your choice). It is more affordable than Ultium. I feed my yearling the Impact " mare & foal" and am quite pleased with the results. He was on Ultium growth before.
Thanks, I will check into those:)
Canola Oil is 100% fat and you can add up to 2 cups a day too. At 2000 calories per cup (about $0.50/cup) it’s a great supplement. Ultium is not bad at about 1900 calories per pound for comparison. Costs about $0.58 per pound here.
Nutrena Empower Boost is 22% fat (from rice bran).
Put the lbs back on my 19yo WB in a month when he came out of Winter ribby.
After that, I started feeding (1/2 recommended amount, along with his regular whole oats) in late Fall & continued until Spring.
Or you could feed rice bran by itself.
I am trying that with current horse, but texture & taste may be an issue.
Just started yesterday, adding 1/3 cup & he eats around the rice bran.
Wetting it resulted in feedpan being tossed 🙄
Mixing it into oats worked better.
We always feed a high fiber grain, like Kalm N Ez with a top dressing of K finish (25% fat) for the horses who need more fat. It doesn’t make any of my horses hot, it won’t go rancid like an oil will in hot weather, and it can be fed dry so no needing to soak a mash. It’s a great product.
If Seminole is available near you, they have a few nice ones. I have fed their Wellness Herbal Blend and now feed Wellness Perform Safe. 12% protein, 8% fat. It’s a pellet.
We use Poulin tec Fibre Max (14-20-14) and Blue Seal Sentinnel Performance Low Starch (12-20-12). Here are the links:

Thanks guys! I live in a rural area so feed choices are a little limited:)
however with specifics like y’all have given it makes my search easier and I can find a dealer and hopefully get some ordered:) thanks again
Any chance you’re in a rural area in Maryland/near Maryland? FCA makes a high-fat/low-carb feed originally designed for draft horses with PSSM.
The barn I work at feeds Omegatin to horses that need extra. I fed my difficult keeper canola oil and rice bran- worked great for me!
Just to toss out another suggestion… I feed rice bran as a high fat feed. I think you can get it in pelleted form, but I get the meal and feed with beet pulp. Works like magic for putting weight on my long time hard keeper and my young one that came to me a bit too bony.
If you are in the SouthEast, Seminole Dynasport is extremely high fat but still low starch. I love it. Horses all do great on it
Renew gold. I added 2 cups per day and saw a big difference.
Triple Crown Sr is relatively high in fat and low in starch (the lowest of the readily available commercial feeds). Adding canola oil is the cheapest way to boost fat if a little messy. I suspect your NSC for the Eqceed is pretty high.
I have a PSSM 2 n/P2 horse and I feed all 4 of my OTTB’s FCA High Fat Low Carb. I’ve been using FCA since 12/2015 and switched to HFLC in 11/2018 and my horses look phenomenal!
Triple Crown Senior is low NSC (11%) and fairly high in fat. For horses that need more fat I have fed canola or flax oil top dressed, and more recently I started feeding Muenster Millings Milestone Optimize 30% pelleted high fat supplement. They ship direct to customer if they don’t carry it in your area. The fat is a mix of healthy fats such as rice bran, coconut, flax, and canola. It’s smells delicious and the horses love it.
I used Buckeye Ultimate finish 40 for weight gain and had good results with that. They also make a full fat pellet Ultimate finish 100 that seemed to be better received by the horses in the barn than Cool Calories or regular oil. I have also used Horsetech radiance and while that was pricey my horse preferred it, and I love Horsetech products and their customer service.
Blue Seal Sentinel LS. High fat, high fiber, low carbs (starch and sugars), 12% protein. The Sentinel line is fixed formulas and they are all steam-cooked, not just the senior, for digestibility I’ve had my 26 y.o. gelding on it for several years. He is boarded outside on free choice round bales with about 12 other geldings. He’s the alpha so he gets enough hay. He needs a few extra calories to maintain his weight and is getting the nutrients he needs.
