High neck blanket with detachable hood?

Does anyone know if there are any blankets that come with a high neck and a detachable hood? I prefer high necks as I feel that they distribute the blanket weight better, but I’d love to still be able to attach a full hood to the blanket (especially when we hit cold snaps in the Midwest).

In case this kind of configuration does not currently exist, can anyone think of any safety concerns with sewing a ring to a high neck blanket to allow for a hood attachment?

TIA!

I think the reason you’re not finding that is that there’s really no place you can attach the rings–you’re either compromising the water proofing in a very important location, sewing them to the outside of the blanket, or you’re sewing them on the inside…but then your hood is under your blanket, and that will just channel water beneath the blanket.

I don’t know of any but if they exist I’ll buy 5.

Someone on this board or another forum was sewing rings onto the binding edge to attach neck covers - the issue is finding a neck cover with attachments in the right place. I can’t recall how they got the whole system to jive.

Anything that can get caught is a safety concern - rings on the regular neck blankets are in a spot less likely to snag on something but depending on the height of the neck I could imagine the horse snagging the ring while coming up from grazing under the fence or whatever. Velcro like the Rhino blankets would be ideal IMO but again, I’m not seamstress and don’t know how feasible that is!

I used to put a Kensington Protective Fly sheet over top of my Rhino Wug. The Kensington has attachments so I was able to use a Rhino hood. The fashion police would be alarmed at the colour combination (blue plaid, dark brown plaid with the purple Kensington plaid…) but it worked great and I never had a problem.

Snuggy hoods in the UK sells turnout hoods/neck covers

These don’t attach to the blanket but might be a nice compromise to add a hood when you need one without the need to sew on rings.

Have you used these? They don’t look water proof, or durable, or even wind resistant?

The Premier Equine blankets have a higher than average neckline, not quite as high as a Wug perhaps

Maybe COTHers need to come together to brainstorm a solution for this. Would high grade velcro backing work? Hmm.

I’ve always wished this product existed too. I’ve also noticed that the high neck applies pressure in a completely different way than standard neck does.

Yup, I do this too. Definitely no matchy-matchy going on with my set up either :joy:

The Kensington sheet has rings. I put rings in the neck cover and bridge the 2 center spots on the neck cover. I tie with baling twine. It’s very secure and easy enough to remove. I do have 2 fly sheets so I can keep the neck cover attached to the fly sheet if I want. Credit goes to Pippigirl for showing me how she sets hers up.

Thank you all for the ideas! I have someone who repairs blankets, so I will pick her brain to see if there is a way to modify the blanket that wouldn’t have an impact on the waterproofing.

I’m wondering if I could put a zipper a few inches behind the edge of the neck and then create a custom hood that would zip on. I’m not sure how that kind of modification would impact waterproofing, but I feel like it would create the best fit.

Unfortunately, any time you puncture the blanket, you’re letting in water…so sewing to the shell is a no go.

The suggestion of putting a sheet over the top, and using those rings to attach a neck is really clever, though!

Aren’t most hoods attached with rings that are sewn to the outside of the blanket? It’s a little different because it’s factory, but still a failure risk for the waterproofing

Sewn to the inside, usually.

And the factory has the ability to weld or seal the seams that the average owner or blanket repair person just doesn’t :woman_shrugging:

:raising_hand_woman: I tried a snuggy hood under neck covers to see if it helped with mane rubs. Diddly squat for that, but seems nicely made and held up surprisingly well. Supposedly water resistant but didn’t really test that.
