High quality pony baucher or similar?

I am having trouble finding high quality 4.5" bits, in particular a double jointed Baucher bit/hanging snaffle, or just a really well made loose ring. Can anyone tell me brands that make high quality bits in 4.5" or even 4.25"? I am currently using a 4.5" Myler Comfort mouth, and it is far too wide, but it seems to me it measures closer to 4.75" anyway. not sure if anyone else has found that to be an issue.

The bit will be for my big saddlebred who sustained a head injury as a young horse, and I think it affected how his head grew as his jaw is very narrow, but he still has a normal horse tongue to accomodate.

Just for ponies has smaller bits that work well. They carry as small as a 4”, otherwise you might need to order from EU. They have a lot more dressage ponies over there.

The very best source for all things pony/smaller horse I know is The Collected Pony! Great customer service and very fast shipping. If you are like me and prefer to shop small, women owned businesses, this company is wonderful!

Any chance Myler is actually not too small in that their bits curve up in a smile shape? They can appear too big while functioning correctly.

Neue Schule has a pony Boucher in several sizes. 114mm will be the closer to 4 1/2”.

I second the neue schule, they have fabulous pony bits and are some of my favorite bits, lovely fit for lots of horses. You can find the pony sizes pretty easily on ebay.

Maybe, but he doesn’t seem to like it, so I have been riding in a leather side pull instead and getting better results. It seems quite wide though; he probably measures closer to a 4.25", but that seems to be an impossible size to find.

I bought mine on eBay UK, my Lipizzans and one saddlebred/WB cross, who are very sensitive like it. However, their favorite is a Herm Sprenger Duo bit!

Yes, now that my choices have opened up thanks to Cothers, I am not sure which bit to pick. He needs something mild, that he is unlikely to get his tongue behind/over, and that he won’t root down into like he did a fat single jointed snaffle. I am thinking the KK Ultra? But then I was looking at some new bit that is a woven mesh/plastic/fabric? That might work for a horse that has a full horse teeth/tongue in a small, pony size mouth. So many options. (He isn’t a dressage prospect, I just felt this was the best forum to get good pony bit options)

Look at the Fager bits. The bits are either sweet iron or titanium, and a lot of the snaffles go from around 4 1/4" up to 5 3/4". The widths on most of the snaffles are 105mm, 115mm, 125mm, 135mm, and some go up to 145mm. They have two models that are Baucher-like.

These bits do not look like the “normal” English bits we use, Louise Fagerson has some interesting ideas on bitting and so far the horses I’ve tried them on seem to like them if I pick the right bit for the horse’s mouth and my hands. Louise Fagerson encourages people to contact her for recommendations for the best bit for their horse, and I would really recommend asking for her input before buying one.

I’m pretty sure Stubben makes their baucher in a 4.5", and it’s my absolute favourite bit! Nice small cheekpieces even in the bigger mouthpieces too

I second the opinion of looking at the Fager titanium Bauchers at Fager.com

I do own one of these in a 5", and I agree, it is a lovely bit with less $$, but on their website, I can’t see smaller than 5" available.

Fager does indeed carry Bauchers smaller than 125mm, or 5”. Go to the website as of now and you shall see multiple types and styles. PM me if you need to?

@QovDressage my comment was about the Stubben.

My small mare liked a very thin bit, like 10mm. Thin is supposed to be harsh, but her mouth was tiny. She went well in a single jointed standard hunter dee, probably Coronet, and a Neue Schule double jointed pony baucher.

@shall I originally had a single jointed for him, but he was pulling/rooting. Possibly because it was too thick though: the thinner ones all had tiny rings and were cheaply made. Do you know what make you have? I really think he lacks much free space in his tiny mouth, as he has normal horse teeth/tongue, in a pony mouth.

I am planning to order a bit or two tomorrow!

Reply @CHT, the hunter dee was good because it had flat sides of the D, so couldn’t pull though. When we moved in to dressage, it was hard for her to take a contact with the dee, so then we found the Neue Schule pony baucher. It may have been a bradoon baucher. She went well in that. Introduced her to a dropped noseband, and she preferred it to a flash. On her small head, the smaller tack looked very nice.
