I have read previous threads on the different boots, but didn’t see what I was looking for. I have a 16hh short cannon appendix. I need some hind boots that are not “tall” so to speak. I need light weight and breathable, also I school in regular Woofs with the 2 Velcro straps. Open to all suggestion.
Why do you need different boots? I use my Woofs on XC and have for years. I also have a smaller horse and the newer high tech boots simply do not fit her - the Dal Mars and Tri-zones do not come in different sizes.
So she goes in her double velcro Woofs (or the BoB version) and they are fine.
You might scour ebay for leather ones, too. I have had some that were wonderful and do protect more than Woof, but they have worn out and I haven’t seen replacements for a long time.
you can use the same thing.
I like the Nunn Finers better than Woofs. You can get those in 3 strap or 4 strap. They don’t really have “front” and “hind”. You just choose the number of velcro straps.

The nunn finer xc boots I have came in front and hind boots. The strike plate is in a different place
One of my mares was very similar. I tried a few fancy brands and nothing fit her well. I use the Nunn finer boots…3 straps in the front and 4 in the back. They hold up great, wash great and offer great protection. I have used them for years! I’d use them over any fancy brand!

We are talking about the plain brushing boots. The ones just like the Woofs.
You just choose strap #. I use 4 strap in the back for my TBs. And I used 3 strap in the back for my mom’s QH.
: )
I will look at the Nunn Finers. I went schooling Saturday and it was quite warm. I had the regular 2 strap Woofs on. The legs felt warmer than I would like. This horse is just built weirdly. Short cannons like a pony. I think my main concern are keeping the legs as cool as possible. I like how the Woofs fit, but they are on borrowed time!
I’ve tried lots of different boots over the years, and I’m pretty happy with my current set, Premier Equine, which have a strike plate and air vents. I think the N.E.W. boots are similar as well.
They stay put, fit well, and seem to keep the leg a bit cooler than traditional boots.
However, I did find the hind boots to be very tall (and a scan of online review suggests I’m not the only one). I have a sturdy Perch/Tb cross who is about 16.2. I don’t think he has really short legs (I dunno, maybe he does…) – the mediums fit perfectly for the fronts but were too tall in hinds so I got the smalls. They just fit around his leg (he has good bone) but are the right size top to bottom.
You can see them in the xc pics in my sig line (he’s the “new little brother”…)
I think I will order some different ones and see. I like the Premiers a lot, so a small would be the size to try. I tried the Boyd Martin Majik Equipe, and they were too tall. Supposedly they would fit any thing 14.3 up. I like how they were made, but they are a little quirky
to put on. The “little brother” is so cute, and looks game to do anything!
He is, thanks! he’s uber cute!!
Yeah, If you try the premiers, I would definitely try smalls behind. They say the mediums fit “xx hands” but I can tell you on my pony they came up above his chestnuts, and I don’t think he’s SUPER stumpy (and is taller than your guy in any event).
But I have liked them so far - easy to use, easy to clean, stay put and do a nice job.
Woof just came out with a new boot, the “Smart” eventing boot. They look pretty cool! If you like the Woofs you have now, maybe these will have a size that fits your kid pretty well.
Also, idk how old your current Woofs are, but I bought a pair of the 4 strap single locks about 2 years ago and they are made from a thin, perforated neoprene that seems cooler and lighter than the older 5 strap Woofs I have on my kid’s hind legs. So if you like the brand and size maybe the newer material will be lightweight enough for you! Good luck!

NEW boots have a short/wide option for horses that have thicker cannons but need less height. They also have fabulous ventilation/fleece or strike guard options depending on what you need. I haven’t tried their Airoflow boots myself but have heard good things.
I rotate between the NEW fleece brushing boots and Valena boots for regular schooling/jumping. The XC boots come out for shows and serious schooling. I am leery of using XC too frequently as the strike guard could cause pressure on tendons - that might just be my paranoia but I feel more comfortable doing it that way.
I have Premier Equine (PEI) and they are the best XC boots I have ever come across. Super, super light weight but also very secure and sturdy. They have vents in the front so the leg stays nice and cool. They don’t pick up dirt or water at all and have always stayed secure on XC.

PS: My guy is a 15.2h Dutch/TB. So his legs are short but have decent bone. These fit him great.
I have a pair of the Nunn Finer hinds and they’ve already started to disintegrate – the velcro straps are fraying (e.g. threads stripping off on the tops/bottoms of the strap), and the neoprene already has a hole in it at the bottom of one boot. Not impressed.
My old hind boots are Boogaloos – like them but they’re hard to find in the U.S.
