Here is a great podcast on the subject of ulcers. “Dr. Ben Sykes is the world leading expert on Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) who is actively changing the way we think, talk about, treat, prevent, and manage EGUS in our horses both in Australia and internationally. He has pioneered research on EGUS with a focus on Equine Glandular Gastric Disease (EGGD) and has numerous peer reviewed publications to his credit including being the lead author of the current international consensus statement on EGUS in the adult horse.”

Sweet! Thank you. The quality of what is out there in podcasts is AMAZING. Just this morning listening to TRT (Tristan Tucker) with an equine dentist on talking about the importance of dental care and NOT riding with a tight noseband. Here that is for anyone interested.

There is a vet podcast I listen to (Straight from the Horse Doctor’s Mouth) - Dr. Lacher had a podcast (S6-EP5) on ulcers where she interviewed Dr. Ben Sykes, who is THE authority on equine ulcers apparently! I learned in that podcast that hindgut ulcers are VERY uncommon and normally the only horses that get them are the ones who were overdosed on something like Bute and they are VERY VERY VERY sick (like near death sick!) So I am not saying it’s impossible for your horse to have ulcers, certainly ask your vet. But it is HIGHLY unlikely unless your horse is extremely sick.

EDITED TO ADD: I scrolled up and see that someone else has already suggested this same episode! Definitely worth listening to - I absolutely LOVE Dr. Lacher’s podcast and best of all, it’s FREE!

Exactly. Actual ulcers back there are very serious, way more serious then typical gastric ulcers.

What DOES happen, possibly more than we think, is an overly acidic situation - hindgut acidosis. That’s why products like Equishure and Succeed work.

Hindgut acidosis can happen when you use just omeprazole for gastric ulcers, as the increased pH means a reduction on how much foods start breaking down in the stomach, so you get more less pre-digested food heading back there.
